I've done the front (axle clamped in vice, mount hub on axle, build wheel from there) and now the back, without an axle, is a bit taxing. I tried to mount it using some spacers and a pair of taper rollers, but even the hub is a bit pissed, so heavens knows what the wheel will look like! Short of mounting the hub back on the bevel drive and building it on the bike, what do people use to build the rear wheel off the bike? Is there a Gucci fixture?

Any help gratefully received.

As you have found ,the hole though the hub,is not the datum.
You need to use the crown wheel or a custom jig.
My wheel builder is set up to do them.
Happy to forward contact details if you can’t achieve what you need.

Well, I built the wheel on the bevel drive, on the bike, this afternoon and it was pretty easy. Had to lace the right hand side before putting the hub on the bevel drive, other than that it was straightforward. I used the rear footrest mounts to put a 'gauge' to check for true and ovalness. Happy.

Late tip.

If anyone else is going to build a spoked wheel M/cycle or push bike I find using a 6" flexible steel rule is a good gauge for true-ness. When it rubs on the rim it makes a lot of noise so you don't need to look at it all the time you know it touching.
