If you've got a Garmin Oregon or similar and have had trouble getting Mapsource or MemoryMap to receive data (routes, marks, tracks) that's because it doesn't work! 
There's an easy work around though.
Connect the Oregon to the PC, then:
MemoryMap
Overlay>importDrive designated as the Oregon):>garmin:>gpx
Set file type to gpx, you'll see waypoints_date - which is any marks you made, plus the other gpx files are your routes and tracks. Select the file you want and import.

File>open>(as above)
