Just tried to upload complete map of Europe and UK and Garmin/Mapsource states that it can only copy 2048 as a max?????

Anyone any insight into this?

What on earth are you trying to load?

The complete Euro City Navigator v7 is only 1736Mb!!

:confused:

Just spoke with Garmin in the US and they say that the maximum limit is 2.0GB!

They may issue a fix but no promises.

The guy said he had never heard of 4.0gb cards!!

Uploading complete map of Europe with ALL info and route calculation data....

Mapsource V7!!!

This limit is down to the type of formatting of the cf card & what the Garmin GPS can read/write to.

FAT 16 is the format type which will allow the creation of a partition maximum size 2.14 GB with 32 kB cluster size.

It is possible to have a partition size of 4 GB using 64 kB cluster size but this is pretty specialised stuff. Windows can't use it.

If the Garmin GPS could understand Fat 32 (Windows 98) or NTFS (NT/XP/W2K/W2003) or other formats such as ext3 for linux it would be able to use much larger partitions

FAT 32 = 140.7 TB (that's terabytes = humungous)
NTFS = 16 EB (that's exabytes = very very humungous - 2^64)
EXT3 - 4 TB could be larger depending on linux version

FAT = File Allocation Table
NTFS = New Technology File System

I believe that the Garmin can only use FAT 16 format so until the hardware and/or OS is changed the maximum data size it can use will be what can be loaded onto a 2.14 GB FAT 16 partition. It won't be 2.14 GB of data either as some free space is required to work properly.

Hope this explains some of the technicalities.

Questions for Simon????????

Simon,

Thanks for the explanation, sounds just the sort or thing my IT colleague explained to me when we changed over to Win 32.

Would it be feasible to have a 4GB+ card with more than one partition if the Garmin software supported it?

As I have a 276C I would be interested if you have knowledge of the inherent capacity limit for the Garmin data cards, presently 256mb, and/or software ??

Terry

Terry

This would be possible with the correct support from the OS

Not sure but others will probably know

Only kidding, I know IT,s the new language. :rolleyes:

I've got the whole of the UK and Eire loaded and that's ~160Mb on a 512mb card that I had lying around. My 2610 came with a 256.

I found this that might be of use:

StreetPilot 2610 GPS / StreetPilot 2650 GPS / StreetPilot 2620 GPS:

Q. What is the largest CF card or microdrive the StreetPilot 2610 will accept? Will I be able to download the entire volume of North American City Navigator v5 onto this data card?

A. Using a compatible 2 GB CF card, you may download the entire volume of North American City Navigator (1050 maps at almost 1.5 GB). The StreetPilot 2610/2650 is compatible with the IBM/Hitachi microdrive 1 GB card. However, the StreetPilot 2610/2650 is not compatible with MagicStore microdrives or the Hitachi 2 GB and 4 GB microdrives.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q. Is the StreetPilot 2620 just a StreetPilot 2610 with a GS MagicStor CF hard drive?

A. While the StreetPilot 2620 and StreetPilot 2610 have the same look and firmware update package, their internal hardware is different and the firmware behaves differently. Additionally, the hard drive shipped in the StreetPilot 2620 has specially enhanced firmware that makes it better suited for our application. The standard GS MagicStor or other hard drive available through normal retail distribution does not have these enhancements and, hence, may cause interference and will not work reliably with Garmin's StreetPilot 2610 or 2620. Use of hard drives that are not approved by Garmin may cause damage to the drive or the unit and, hence, void the warranty.

Go to : http://www.garmin.com/support/faqs/ and type in "CF II" to search for information - omitting the quotes
