Hey,
any of you guys from WA ??

I'm moving to Secret Harbour south of Perth in 3 weeks time (GS to follow in a sea container) and was wondering if there are any UKGSers over that side of Aus ?? The place is reported to be like Little Britain due to the large POM community there.

I've spoke to a few decent sorts on ADVrider from WA so maybe a few of them frequent here as well ?

Please tell me I'm not the first to arrive there !!

Pukmeister, owyergoin? I'm writing from Western Australia, however I live about 3 hard days riding north of Perth in a little town called Kununurra. I think there is a tosser or two down your way and I know there's a big mob of Poms down there... Hang in there mate someone else will reply soon, surely.

Good luck with the move to Perth WA, Puk.

Not sure if i moved to the other side of the globe that i would want to meet my fellow country men in large numbers....but maybe it is a home away from home.. :nenau

Was born there a few years ago but the folks returned after 10 years.....still not sure why the Da wanted to come back,my Ma never really forgave him.... :blast

Make sure to keep posting here and plenty of piccies..

I'm a sociable kind of fella, I don't care if folks are Poms, Aussies or whatever so long as they are decent folk with a love of two wheels, beer and the good things in life.

Do you have dual nationality Decster? I can see why your mum must be a bit regretful.

I have no intention of returning to UK, my contract in WA is for 6 years and I've sold up and severed all ties. It will be hard to come back to a UK 3-bed Semi in the rain after 6 years of having a better lifestyle. Eventually gonna buy my own 5 bedrm detached house with treble garage and swimming pool in a golf course in Secret Harbour, only half a mile from endless white beaches, although going into rented accom first.

The only downside is no more attending BSB/WSB meetings plus Aussie telly, its really shite thank god for satellite coverage. Maybe I'll do a lot of diving and sea fishing/golfing/riding instead and learn to enjoy Aussie rules and Rugby League (state of origin) .

Will post some pics and rideout snaps once settled.

Smilee Mark, we don't get to Aus for another 4 weeks, arriving on 13th September and straight into temporary accom until our rental house is ready. My bike arrives by sea at end October so no rides till then. You are most welcome to pop in on your way through and share a few beers if your time allows.

...yeah, but Phillip Island is a lot easier to get to.......

I did Perth.....few days in Adelaide....then Phillip Island, a couple of years ago...Even with the Ozzy distances, it's an easy "do"....

Hey Adam, I've only just joined here, so have just seen your thread. I live in Perth and fly around on my GS1200 Adv. I'm a pom too, been here a couple of years. I was thinkning of joining the WA BMW club and joining them for some of their rides. I've never been to Secret Harbour, but it might be time for a visit. Get in touch and we'll do some exploring. We lived in Safety Bay and Rockingham before going north.
Moved to a town in W.A called Mount Newman for 7 years.

Born on Isle of Wight, moved there where 6, stayed for 7 years and olds decided to come back to U.K. A decision they now deeply regret.
Good thing is i was offered a Oz passport......but they got me a Brit one :blast

Use to have a monkey bike and brother had some Honda dirt bike thing. Open gate and the whole "backyard" was there to be explored.
Once my Bro went bush in his car for 4 days. Found him by following the bits of car that had dropped off. He was down to his rad water by then.
Would go back in a heartbeat, but not educated to a good standard, school was via a radio........and i didn't bother to turn it on most times.
Town now is very much populated. Schools, shops, pubs hotels,even shops.
There is enough ore there in the open cast mine for another 100 years, and plenty of jobs if you can stand the heat and dust.

Hey guys, thanks for all the replies. We are super busy at the moment packing all our stuff, one week to go then its a long plane journey to WA. If I don't reply for a couple of weeks many apologies, got too much to do. Once we get settled I'll take you guys up on the offer of a beer and a two wheeled sightseeing trip.

Got a call this week to say that my GS had finally arrived in WA, however.......

I need to provide customs with an independent valuation figure from a qualified vehicle inspector or bike dealer at my own expense, so I called just about every bike dealer in the Perth area INCLUDING the main BMW agent in Perth. None of the them could help me out as they were all too busy, not able etc etc. Looks like I'll be doing my own servicing from now on and the not-so-helpful dealers can get feck all from my wallet in the future.....a good job Nippy Normans sell oil filters and do air mail.

I eventually managed to track down a guy who is qualified to value vehicles and is a classic vehicle specialist. He wasn't cheap but I didn't exactly have any other option plus he was willing to do things immediately. Au$250 later (ouch)I got the all-important piece of paper with the valuation figure to give to customs to start the ball rolling.

Now all I gotta do is get the bike through quarantine (probably with an Au$200 steam clean or some other fleecing govt scam involoved), then pay 10% of the valuation fee as GST (Au$1400 approx) and I can get it delivered (probably at more expense). Then I just gotta get it inspected for aussie compliance checks and registered with new number plates and insurance, again at my expense and I'll be legal and riding.

I may be on the road by Xmas day, I remain optimistic.

God how I love that bike and can't wait to get it back, but I think in hindsight I should have just sold it in UK and saved myself all the hassle with this personal import bullshit.

Hi folks,

After waiting for months to get my visa sorted, I'll finally be joining the party in Perth in the next couple of weeks.

At the moment I'm in the last stages of putting life in NZ on hold, and I'll be leaving the 1150 in storage rather than go through the dramas of importing a bike again. As you say Puk at the end of the day I think it's better to forget about any emotional attachment to 'yer bike and sell it rather than import ... unless your bike is particularly “special”.

After a damp and dreary winter and spring in northern NZ (still preferable to any season in the UK

), I'm really looking forward to getting out and about as soon as I can find myself a suitable bike.

Your not wrong mate, I finally got the GS on the road on December 23rd (after arriving in WA on 10th September). It's nice to be on two wheels again but the roads are not the same as UK and the driving standards of the average car driver here are pretty bad IMHO so you need to be extra careful for those unpredictable cage drivers.

All I gotta do now is do some weekend rideouts and find some decent stretches of tarmac (or trail) without speed cops on it.

I don't know about the Pukmeister, but I've been here since Sunday and I think it's bloody marvelous.

Right slap bang in the middle of town. The company is putting me up in a decidedly “average” motel on the river front, but at least it’s nice and handy for the pubs and sight seeing in the evenings

The office is in West Perth which isn’t too far away, and the big difference between Perth and NZ is that here there is a public transport system. The fact that it’s reliable and free within the CBD is all a bit much for me at the moment.

Hopefully, I should be into my own place soon and then the next thing on the agenda is finding a little scoot :moped:

However, before I spend too much time searching I need to talk to and accountant over here to get all the info on the LAFHA. Apparently if you can demonstrate that you are living away from home, you can claim the income tax back on the cost of some transport, and a mate in Melbourne is now running round in a VX Landcruiser courtesy of the scheme.

If I can swing the tax break, I might be running round on one of those plastic fantastic things, if not an 1100 or an airhead, or … well pretty much anything that takes my fancy

All in all, it’s a tough life life for a daft Geordie … :bounce1
