new battery goosed ?

I would say that would be enough to cause a problem! you may have got away with it though. clean it all properly, regrease the gears, straighten the grease plate and 'peen' it back in place. a soldering iron should be able to melt wee bits of the plastic surround over so it holds the plate in place securely.

I (being an optimist) would bet that cures the problem.

Plenty of meat on those brushes IMO.

Seems like a plan. I am wondering whether the bearings are OK? Looks like a bit of excess armature end float going on.

When I did mine I remember there being a washer/spacer (or two). Worth checking a parts diagram, and making sure everything is present. Who knows who has been in there before you.

See http://largiader.com/tech/valeo/
The end clip was on top of a washer and a thin shim. Both of these on the outside.
I read elsewhere that one should have been inside.

The rivets were still there so i think i was first in.

So not too sure.

The grease plate dislodged and shorting out the armature couldn't have been good for it.

sorted

a good clean out, straightened the grease cover, popped it in and melted spots round the edge with a soldering iron to help keep it there

bike fired straight up, clock stayed right

will leave it over night with no charger attached and see if it's good to go

have to say the spring was "interesting"
