£22K for a full spec non adventure model

They gave the factory accessory packs off to a tee nowadays
Everything is an extra and they pull your pants down for £££££

When I bought my new first GS in 1997 everything was standard and the only factory option was heated grips (£200)

How times change
When I bought my first GS in 1999 (1150) There were several optional extras. The Hand guards were optional, As was the RID (Rider information display) Center stand and Luggage prep. The seats were either Two, Rider & pillion, Or rallye bench.

Going back a little farther in 1990 I paid $7,794 for my new 1991 R100GS. $7,794 in 1990 converts to $17,604 in today's dollars. The new R1300 that will sell for around $25,000 well equipped (which would be $10,600 1990 dollars). But other than the letters GS, shaft drive, and boxer engine layout, the two are not even close to be comparable. Power, braking, efficiency, lighting, gear box, durability, handling, tyres, on and on are all vastly increased or improved.
Moto Guzzi's V85TT would be the closest comparison to a 1991 GS and even it has way better brakes, handling, lighting, more power, ABS, TC, cruise control, etc. and it lists for $12,000 or only $5,300 dollars back in 1990.
New motorcycles are far, far, better now than they were in years past and they don't really cost much more in real money, sometimes even less.

mmm... I can't see the average local african mechanic fixing any of this when you are your RTW adventure

Maybe it won't break down and need the services of your 'local african mechanic'?

I will call it here.
Suspension and drive shaft woes within 12 months

I think the FD will be ok as they have used the 1200/1250 one that on the whole as been loads better than the hex head ones but, they have done what Ducati have done with the DesertX and put a longer swing arm in to help handling, this may well put more stress on the shaft itself but time will tell.

Interesting that BMW are still sticking with the 19/17" wheel combination even on the Trophy version. Guess there may be something about the telelever set up that precludes a 21" front wheel

KTM and Triumph make it work on the their big bikes so why not BMW?

What would be the benefit of a 21" front wheel?

It would almost certainly be heavier and therefore increasing the un-sprung weight.

Edit, just seen your post about better off-road.

I suspect not many take their GS's off-road, even though BMW featured loads of off-road stuff in their promo video.

Yes, that is a real shame, I know some peeps have fitted a 21” and it makes a massive difference off road and only looses a little on the road when pushing to the limit.

Massive difference off road, bike tracks so much better but on road it can be a bit vague but you get used to it.

Yep big difference off road and on the road just promotes a slightly different riding style (I tend to end up riding a bit smoother with a 21" front).

Just interesting that BMW have never put a 21" front on a telelever bike - the HP2 Enduro having conventual forks.

Yeah, wunderlich did a conversion for hexheads but don’t think they offer a kit for the wet heads, I keep thinking about converting one set of my wheels, need to check if the old G/S’s have the same number of spokes as my 1200 does. But we are getting off topic now.

I really hope this doesn’t sell so they reduce the cost so I can afford one. Finally bmw step away from oversize overweight bikes. Still wish they would make a 200kg 800cc boxer bike but that will never happen but this is the next best thing. Can’t wait to test ride it, dealer will certainly have to pressure wash it when I bring it back.

ita only lighter as you don't get a centre stand and the tank is smaller

Looking at it it’s only lighter than the 1250 the 1200 is the same weight. But I love the smaller stripped down look as well and some of the changes like the swingarm will make it a better bike for me. Children, get your bags packed, you’re being sold

it looks like bmw have made appear smaller and lighter, and introduced the 'automatic lowering' feature.. in order to regain sales from the other smaller adventure bikes that have become popular (tenere 700 etc)

i think the new X headlight design is a bit naff though

Which is the best thing they have done in years, I hope I hate it when I test it as I’m going to be skint for years.
