Maybe he was a man of principals, maybe he had agreed to work the overtime before he struck lucky and didnt want to let anyone down.
Mondeo no... If it was me Id have a battered old landy with the biggest fekin v8 I could fit in it
I knew a lot of seriously rich people in Jersey who drove very boring average cars just to keep a low profile. Turn up somewhere in a Ford and be treated normally whereas turn up in a new Bentley etc and peoples attitude change. Can be either brown nosing to get a tip or nasty with jealousy.
One company boss I knew bought Ford Orions for all staff entitled to company cars. From the junior managers up to himself as owner of the business. Only me as auditor knew how much he made from the business each year but it was a lot. He told me once "I treat everyone equally here and there are all happy. The day I drive into work in a Rolls Royce I would have a strike on my hands".
He kept his money very close and had a house full of mega expensive antiques.
Incidentally, he was Scottish as well.
Personally, if I won £3.5m I would like to use it to quietly help a few charities rather than flash it all on bling. I've dealt with many very wealthy people in my banking career and many of them are gits, especially the "new money" types who want the whole world to know how rich they are. The "old money" types tend to be much more discreet and keep hold of their money much longer.
£20K + on a Mundano which will do the job or £40K + on Bumaudcedes that will have you shafted by the dealers every time you need to go there (often as none of them are particularly reliable) and key slashes down the side regularly from the jealous neds.
Perhaps he is just sensible though not sensible enough to tick the no publicity box assuming that it's still there.
Plausible but unlikely. This is where the resentment will start, has started, some of his workmates (the one who told me,) believe that they should be getting the overtime, he doesn't need the money, he doesn't need the job etc etc.
I really do wish him all the best, its a life changing amount of money to get overnight, he needs to change his life.
Its a top of the range Mondeo, what's that £25/30K, hardly inconspicuous.
It might be in Jersey, but not here
Like the thinking of the boss who bought the Orions and I do know some of the old/new money types you mention, discretion is an art learnt over time.
What a mess that was, the driver ran into the hospital looking for a fire extingisher, I passed just after they had put it out
He should have run to the Alex hotel, just hope he has good insurance.
