Why does everybody set the mixture screws more then is stated in the manual?

The manual clear states “unscrew both regulating screws evenly approx 3/4 turns.” :rob

I normally set my carbs accordingly to this but I fear that running too “lean” I could damage the engine….

besides the additional power is there any reason to run richer that what is stated in the manual?

What am I missing?

just take that as a starting position. wear in the engine and carbs, different exhaust systems and non standard air filters all require the screw to be altered to suit your engine.

with the engine fully warmed up start at 3/4 then try turning either way until the engine revs increase and peak. It's not unusual to have slightly different screw position for each cylinder.

Also, the mixture screw is mainly for the starting and slow running of the engine ,so will not effect the mixtures up the rev range unless you have another problem, Jets/float levels and air leaks etc..
