“What new owners have experienced instability problems

Must admit that the front end wheelies at will, great fun.

Anybody tried a pillion and luggage? Does that change the bikes stability? It will do , especially a heavy top box or does the dynamic esa compensate?

I havent had any tank slappers but I am not convinced about the stability at three figure speeds on dual
carriageways( obviously I mean autobahn) with wagons etc. It may just be new bike new tyres , time will tell but something feels vauge to me or it could just be the active suspension . Anyone else noticed this or is it just me

Not sure of any bike that feels stable at 100+ in the turbulence of other vehicles like vans and trucks...

I know I thing I just need some miles on roads that are not wet covered in salt and at about freezing point to get to know it better. Observations are after first 450 miles and after 2008 GSA.

Its just you:comfort:D

Seriously , ride any bike hard off road and you are going to get unsteady , on road again push a bike and all shit can break loose , had many an instant on all sorts of bikes ( last one was the 1200 mts ) so the new LC is just in a long list of maybe and when

I test rode one for the day. I covered just over 300 miles. I didn't find any tank slapper moments on the road and had cruse control set between 80 and 95 two up. On my own i took it to 130 sustained and no problems there either. off road it did the metalled road on Salisbury Plain with ease. In deep mud ruts it felt heavy but it's no KTM exc. The only grip was that it liked a drink but don't we all. :beerjug:

Well as long as it can take 130+ without weaving etc. it should be fine.

I'd expect that after all the testing it should be absolutely fine at speed - the older TC's have no problem at all with 130+ speeds - so I can't see there being an issue.

Not all of us - tee-total for three years now, it helps towards the cost of servicing beemers :jager

I don't own one but there was no sign of instability on my test ride. It's a fabulous bike and I WANT ONE !!!!!

Test Ride

I love my new GS and have now covered enough miles on all road surfaces to conclude it is very stable and tracks true.

However there is a lot of conjecture about tank slappers and instability so I thought it would be good to get FACTS from, and the experience of, owners.

So lets establish some facts and try to slay the myths that seem to perpetuate plus the silence from BMW.

Cancelled order for 1200 re stability issue. Took a bike out for a test on Wed, while my 2012 plate was serviced. Thoughts after about 60miles. Engine much smoother/faster. Throttle very responsive!! Gearbox about the same ie still a bit cluncky. Bike feels lighter at front end and a bit twitchy and overall a bit smaller. Mirrors crap. When I got back on mine it felt more solid but that might just be familiarity. Engine felt a bit agricultural compared to LC. Is it worth the hype, not sure, the engine is definately smoother/quicker. But I'm not sure if there is much else that's that much better! Would I buy one? maybe when the dust has settled and there is no further reports re. stability.

Shame on you Bike Magazine

Would your so called journalist care to confirm whether or not he was riding off road at the time, and whether he had one hand on the bars at the time?

Off road, one handed, cruise control on? Yes or no?

I'm not in a position to buy yet but based on my test ride I'd buy one tomorrow if I could (which is more than I can say for your scumbag magazine). There was absolutely no sign of head shaking or instability.

What a load of Hogwash.

Shame on you !

Have you read the article? he was on road - I don't doubt that something happened to break off the lock-stops but no one who has bought a new GS (me included) has yet reported any instability issues. The bike is faster steering than the twin-cam BUT it tracks through the corners beautifully, so much better than the old bike - it really does feel much better in the corners.

How many miles did your old bike have on it ? - you are comparing a new bike with an old one - even down to riding on brand new round tyres rather than square ones.

I'm sure it's a better bike but is the geometery / suspension much different to a twin cam ? Not convinced the handling can be a lot better

I have read the article and there is no mention of off road.

That is a crucial point I would like clarified, there is some doubt I believe.

We've (most of us) ridden the bike. Do you seriously believe that it's capable of throwing a tank slapper on the road out of the blue? I seriously don't.

As I said before I would happily buy one tomorrow but they have succeeded in throwing enough doubt in people's minds to cause some cancelled orders

I have had head shakers on a variety of bikes caused by worn head bearings, worn wheel bearings, tyres, tyre pressures, top box on, top box off. It has always been readily obvious what the bikes had in mind. I have never had an explosive tank slapper occur out of the blue on a bike that had not pre shown that tendency. The LC did not show any such intentions to me.

But if you believe the article don't buy - it will just move someone else up the queue.

No you wouldn't, you're buying a Camper.................remember:blast

You've just disposed of a perfectly good GSA with only 400 miles on it, so why are you harping on about buying another:rolleyes:

I'm sure the guys at Bike magazine, in reality.................don't give a fuck about what your opinion is :blagblah
