The CeeBailey looks very much like the Wunderlich, but exactly how thick is the screen Keef800?

According to the Cee Bailey website, all screens are "hand crafted from .187 aircraft grade acrylic, with hand polished and beveled edges".

.187" is approx 5mm.

First thanks to everybody who chipped in with help, as I said I'm new to this, and thanks Lunchbox, I am now a subscriber/tosser but wasn't when I first started posting.
Now you can see the various screens that I've tried over the last six months.
First one is where I'm now at; CalSci 19in, suits me. More info at http:www.calsci.com available from Jon at Heroblobs in UK.
Second is Metal Mule screen superimposed on Calcsi, see comments earlier in thread. Info on this screen is in page 5 of thread, see BumbleBee posts..
Then we have Metal Mule with TT Extender, and finally BMW Touring screen on CalSci
I'm now at peace or is it in pieces!:Motomartin

Suberb Pete, just what I was looking for - a summary! You have me very interested in the CalSci screen. I'm 5'11'' with an airhawk seat and the standard height seat on the F800gs. Would you recommend the 19 or the 21 or should I just call Jon? Are you looking through the screen or over it?
My concern is that the screen could start going a little milky if the quality isn't up to scratch (excuse the pun). Any issues since fitting it?
PS, PM'd you on where you got the spoilers for the handguards.

Cheers Pete

Do any of you guys know if the MRA Vario screen spoiler is available separately so I can modify my Metal Mule screen.

I am really tempted to try and build a frame to support the metal mule screen to stop it vibrating and adding the ability to add an extender on the top, but my lack of skill with regard to fabrication might prove a problem

Yes it is from HPS. i still have the MRA spoiler available if you have not ordered one from HPS as yet as it did not work for me. Let me know your situation. Cheers :augie

Sorry Fykka, Didn't see this till now. I replied to the private message on the basis that I thought you are 5-10. On basis of standard seat and Airhawk, I'd say 19" is right. No quality or other issues since I fitted it, It's great as far as I'm concerned!
Funny, I also used an Airhawk for a while on my Portuguese ride in June, but now my bum seems to have got used to the seat. I actually think the low seat is more comfortable than the standard one:):)

Let's know how you get on.

Brilliant. For the benefit of other posters too, was installation of calsci easy and are there any issues lock to lock given you have the same hand guards as I have?

I rang Jon, he said there would be absolutely no issue with any loss of clarity (ie milkiness) in the screen which was a concern I had (this happened on my last bikes stock screen).

Adjustable wind deflector fitted to F800GS

I am 189cm tall and the BMW touring screen did not give enough protection againt the wind. There was a huge improvement after I fitted the Z-Technik 20inch screen but I was still not 100% happy since there was still a small amount of buffeting around the helmet . I then decided to make my own wind deflector with perspex and fit it to the screen with a height adjustable bracket.

The deflector "slides" up and down on 8 x screws with nylon washers. The screen is solid and stays in it's position because the nylon washers ( 2 per screw ) adds just enough resistance.
I have taken the bike up to 160km/h and the screen works 100%. I can ride comfortably with an open visor up to that speed. The added bonus is the HUGE inprovement in windnoise and there is absolutely no buffet, what so ever.
I was not sure how the Z-Technic screen will cope with the added windresistance and for that reason I have added 3x braces.
The screen is as stable as you can hope for even on real rough terrain.

A very, very interesting side effect is that the bike accelerates much faster now above 80 km/h, I can only presume it is because of the cleaner airflow over my body compared to before. There is also less throttle input neccasery to keep the bike at a steady speed above 100km/h.

Have a look at my photo's here:

Maybe they should lash out for this .............

......well someone ought to .......so we can be told if it is any good ! :augie

At £500 plus it won't be me!! But the Ztechnic looks good, it seems to be wider than most, which should help airflow around the body and side of the helmet. Where did you get it Lopser, and how much? How did you make the spoiler - it looks like a canibalized bit off another screen.

Hi all, been reading these with interest as I have the same issue - great bike but screen no good above 50-60mph. (I'm 6ft tall)

I bought the BMW touring screen but it curves backwards a lot and still creates turbulence. It is better on motorways than standard though.

However, I had another thought........Has anyone tried using straight handlebars? This would lower your head and change the angle of the wind onto the rider. This would affect the turbulence and maybe the noise too.

Might be a dumb idea, but anyone got any views?

Cheers

I will Screen and screen and screen again!!!

The standard screen was not for me so I had the dealership fit me the F800GS standard to my F650 GS but still wasn’t happy I should have looked into it more there’s only 40mm difference from low point to low point (middle) being 6 foot and 3mm I wasn’t happy with the wind buffering on my chest I think I have strengthened my neck muscles.
I suppose it’s about personal preference and what you do with your bike; the standards are sporty looking in my opinion. At my first service I took out a loan F650GS it was fitted with there now available larger touring screen with the aluminium brace thingy the difference was amazing so I searched around!
Finally purchased from Hornig Webb site, purchased their High windscreen with 20mm handle bar risers, it’s great for me no more chest buffering having the BMW Hand protectors which I achieve full lock and does not touch the screen (some screens warn that you do not achieve full lock!) anyhow they turned out to be TT risers and the screen is Givi it stands 450mm above the high beam housing, tested it to 99.3 MPH

I realise that the sizing and talking about various screens is confusing as you have to see it or experience it for yourself I still have the original F650GS and F800GS screens but I do not think I will use them (its like those things you put up your loft) but I suppose there get me out of trouble spares.
Any how I put them all together so you can see for your selves the height difference!

Think of all that extra sticker space!

Hope this of use,

Dean

I don't know how many trails you intend to ride if any but you'll find that having stickers in your field of vision as you're trying to pick your away around ruts and rocks a real pain. I found the vignette's you need in Austria and Slovakia a real pain. Next time I'll locate them on the body work.

Interesting Point :thumb

The stickers I suppose are a personal thing bit like tattoos. Except I can peel them off if I choose :aidan

I don’t really see the stickers when normal riding it’s a bit like sitting at the back of a packed cinema you don’t notice the people because there is a much bigger exciting picture up ahead!

I do intend to ride some trails If I stand up the stickers disappear!
Standing001.jpg

Or I could crawl up the loft and fit the original screen (no stickers)

I was thinking of first getting some skills from the BMW off road centre in Wales before I Trail.

Higher screen - lower bars

Thanks to KeeF650 for earlier reply, will look at Cee Bailey and maybe the option of a screen extender on existing touring screen too.

On lower bars idea - thanks for detailed feedback emdub - however there is a separate 800 thread on exactly the same lines, so will follow that one too.

There's a good solution there somewhere!

How did I do it?
The first thing I did was to cut the shape of the lip out on a piece of cardboard. Then took it to a plastics place that cut the shape out by laser cutter on a piece of 4 mm perspex. The cost was R200.00 From there onwards I did everything myself. The perspex was put in the oven at 200 degrees for 15 minutes , then I shaped it. The 2 x aluminium square tubes was bought at a hardware shop for R80.00. I took it to an enginering works to have the 5mm wide grooves cut out, another R 80.00. Lastly I bought 8x screws from BMW at R20.00 each. The bracing for the screen was done by a 10mm aluminium tube for R 50.00 ( cut into 3 x shorter pieces ) and the powdercoating was also R50.00

I have attached black tape to the front and back of the screen( directly in front and behind the aluminium ) to hide the aluminium pieces and it looks even better now.

The screen is as stable as you can hope for even on real rough terrain. I have just completed a 1500km trip on rough terrain and the screen behaved as expected, ride report here : http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=40500.0

Trashed my screen!

Oh bugger. I just trashed my Wunderlich Ergo screen trying to fit an MRA spolier onto it! And it's my birthday :(. The instructions do come with dire warnings about drilling holes in acrylic screens.

Back to square one. The Ergo is pretty good but I still got a lot of helmet noise at 70+. Thought the spoiler would crack the problem, but instead I cracked the screen. Will see if I can trial the complete MRA vario tour screen and spoiler. It does look a lot shorter than the Ergo, but maybe the aero-dynamics will work for me...5.7"" with lowered seat.

The down side of a tall screen is off-roading. Standing on the pegs, it always made me nervous looking down at that Ergo screen edge right under my nose/throat on rough ground. On one occasion the bike went down on some large rocks. The Adventure Spec crash bars did a good job but one of the side bulges on the Ergo screen took some pressure and it cracked the fairing where the the screen attaches at the side. Had to get it plastic welded.

Having read all the contributions I'm now totally confused. All screens seem to work for some people and not for others. Why the hell didn't BMW come up with a decent one in the first place??? I used the Ergo to replace the BMW touring screen which as everyone says, is an improvement on the stock 650, but channels the wind right in your face. For goodness sake BMW, what do your design team do all day???!! Do they never ride on motorways in the rain?

Has anyone ever seen a TT desertio screen on a bike outside of the showroom/catalogue?

MetalMule Experience

Hi all

I have a 2009 F650GS with Low seat (I am a short arsed 5' 7" with stumpy legs!). Great bike, really enjoying it so far, however am yet to get the screen right.

The standard "screen" on the 650 really does nothing at all so I replaced it immediately with a MetalMule. This successfully took all the pressure at motorway speeds off my chest and shoulders, but now dumps flies, rain, stones etc straight at my visor... this is not ideal!

Although buffering doesn't seem to have got bad noise levels are definitely worse - to the extend that i find myself in a "hunch" on long motorway trips.

Is there anyone else out there who is short (like me!) and on a f650 who has found a solution that works for them? (I have trawled this thread and not seen anyone else own up to being a short-arse!)

I do realise that all these solutions are very specific and what works for one doesn't always work for someone else - but i'm open to suggestion as the current "fling it at my face" solution has to go.

Cheers

Im 5ft 8 with stumpy legs and I have an 800GS with lowered seat and the touring screen and it works a treat - you will see other people say it's crap but I find it perfect and I think it looks the best :augie

I'm 5' 7" but with inside leg 31" so, perhaps, a different shape:). I've got the TT screen which worked pretty well, keeping the wind off my chest better than the Metal Mule one. Now I've added a variable lip like the MRA one and it works even better at reducing wind noise - buffeting was never a problem.

Difficulty is that I have now idea whether it's possible to buy just the MRA lip (I was given it) though there are recent posts here showing how to have a similar one made.
