I fitted the winglets last night. All I would say is ignore Nippy Normans Templates and instead place the winglet itself on the bike and mark with a white board marker the points where you need to drill. The template has a smaller footprint than the winglet itself and so when I placed the winglet on it was fouling the centre panel by a few millimetres.

It's not my finest DIY job and both winglets are positioned differently by a few mils. When they say to drill slowly drill really, really slowly. :augie

It's good of nippys to supply the drill bit but in hindsight I'd be more inclined to use a wood drill bit as it would move around less.

That said the winglets performed well this morning. There was snow everywhere so I couldn't really go for it. I will go home via the motorway and report back.

:thumb2

I fitted mine a week or so ago - I wasn't convinced there was enough 'meat' in the panel at the front for Nippy's well-nut, so I just drilled a 6mm hole and used rubber washers under the bolthead and winglet... worked for me!

I know what you mean. If it receives even the smallest impact it'd rip the top edge off the wing.

Incidentally Greggers. Your name has just reminded me of something. I name embossed on the inside plastic of my Touratech Hand guard last night.

It was 'Greger Austria'. I googled it and wondered if it was the work of Rudolf Greger? http://gp.co.at/ :beerjug:

MRA vario screen

Just been informed that MRA vario are bringing out a new screen for the F800GS in june. :clap
Had one on me old bike and was brill.:bounce1

Why have they took so long though?:nenau

I think it adds a little bit of noise. Almost a crackling pop sound but not much to be a bother. I have ear plugs in and I don't notice it. The wind still catches the peak on my Shoei hornet DS so I'm considering getting the TT screen and perhaps sticking the spoiler on top of that. :thumb

Your helmet commentary is interesting. I had an Arai XD. With the beak in place, it was always noisy...even with earplugs behind my F650 Dakar and DL650 Vstrom Suzuki. I spent months trying to quiet down the windshields on those two bikes. My friend bought a scorpion helmet...so I had to road test it. It was very quiet on both bikes....so the conclusion was obvious....it was the freakin helmet, not the windshields...sold the expensive XD, bought a Scorpion...added reward...the XD shields are VERY soft...scratch and fog horribly....scorpion is wonderful in that regard...and the helmet cost less than 1/2 of the XD.

To be fair the hornet peak is flexible but at certain speeds in windy conditions it vibrates and strangely tickles my ears from the vibration. Going back to the screen issue (I realise this should be in another thread) a lot of people are trying to find the perfect solution to stopping wind getting through but on the flip side It's the opposite in the heat.

In southern Germany last year it was 36C and I was in need of a cool breeze. I was glad my hand guards were not too big and that I could remove my screen extender and get some cool clear air into my helmet.

It's one thing to consider. :thumb2

how much does the TT screen interfere with NN winglets? Could the screen be modified slightly to accommodate both?

Jon

I still only have the standard BMW screen. I haven't fitted the winglets yet, either, since I'm still unsure about which aftermarket screen to go for. I'm considering the MM/Powerbronze one, but also thinking about just fitting one of those TT screen extenders instead, so I could still use the winglets. If I could think up a way to fit the winglets without having to drill the panels, then at least I'd know if they were worth fitting. Hmmm...:augie

There's just too much choice for my little brain to cope with...:D

yeah I fitted the winglets and the drill went a few mm off course. the right winglet is not equally positioned relative to the left one at the point closest to the rider. I made sure the drill holes were perfect on the front fixing points. :blast

I only notice it when sitting on the bike and I managed to recover the situation without having to drill another hole.

I have the TT screen extender and it's not enough to send the wind over my head. (I'm 5' 7") Flies still hit my visor in the summer so I'd be prepared to get the TT screen and modify any excess plastic with a jigsaw and or a heat gun. :augie

Well, that solves that question then - same height as me. Although - do you have the standard or the low seat? Mine is the low one - but OTOH I'm considering an Airhawk for next January's big trip so that's going to raise me up a bit.

Ah well, maybe the TT extender's not the solution. TBH it doesn't look like great value when the MM/Powerbronze extended screen costs less, but it's the thought that it could be removed when appropriate that tempted me. One other thing, though - can you vary the angle, or is it fixed?

I have the low seat, with the original screen and the extender. I also use the airhawk which raises me up into the air stream which catches my peak. Even though we might be a certain height standing up when sitting down we are not that dissimilar. I'm sitting next to a guy here at work who is 6ft but we are eye to eye.

I want the TT screen in tandem with the extender. I'm going to HUMM 2009 and so will want to remove it for the off-road stuff.

There is no scope to vary the angle. It also wiggles a bit in the wind. As I headed south last year all the motorway signs flickered as the light reflected off the screen extender

Well, that about closes the case for TT's extender then, as far as I'm concerned. Thanks, it's helped me come to a decision of sorts.

HUMM looks like fun, but so do lots of other things I can't afford, either due to time or money...:D

Don't get me wrong I'd rather have the extender than not but I feel I need the TT screen and then add the extender onto that for the long journeys.

Copied from handguards thread...

Tim, What screen is that? And how do you find it? At present I have a TT screen with an MRA screen extender. This set-up moves the wind blast to the top of the helmet and reduces windnoise, but I'm getting quite a bit of buffeting.
Anybody tried the Calci screen?
It's the Eagle screen. The animated gif below shows the standard F650GS screen, the BMW High Touring screen and the Eagle.

Bearing in mind I have the standard seat (not lowered) and normally have an Airhawk saddle fitted, the Eagle could still do with being a bit taller. At some stage I'd like to borrow a TT extender to see if it makes any difference.

Tim

nicely done!

Thanks for that. Really give a proper perspective.

Thanks for the info Tim.
Like the pic.
I'm edging towards the Calsci screen myself. They have a very interesting site:
http://www.calsci.com
Their screens are not the prettiest, but the theory behind the design makes sense. Anyway, if they work, I don't much care what they look like - I spend more time riding the bike than admiring it!
On the Calsci site there are links to both the advrider and f800riders
forums and comments by people who have tried their screens and loved them.

Tom, do you have any pics? Which MRA model did you choose? Any reference number appreciated, because I have the TT and not happy with it.

I'm thinking that MRA can help me to get rid off that helmet blast caused by TT. Previous owner had a lower seat, and I'm 5.7, but TT does not help for recovering from the gusting wind on my visor.

Thanks

Hakan

Hakan, sorry, no pics at the moment.
I got my MRA spoiler from a company called HPS, [Harwood Performance Source Ltd.] in Derbyshire. Contact - [email protected]. Tel.no. 0870 774 7740.
The model you need for the TT screen is the VTA3.
It cost £45 plus postage.
As I mentioned earlier the spoiler worked well in raising the wind blast but caused some buffetting which I find annoying.
However screens can vary in their effectiveness from one rider to another, so it may work perfectly for you.

Tom thanks a lot for the info. I think I will try my chance with TT&Vario combination.

MRA Spoiler on TT screen

Hakan,
A couple of pics for you.

Spoiler in high position (lef) and low position (right). There are a couple of intermediate positions as well.
