► Alternative screen options

Have to agree with consensus. TT screen is so much better. It makes me go faster too!
I was a bit perturbed by the difference in noise at first but that is totally outweighed by the lack of windblast and bug blast too.
I am 5ft 2 and the 650 has been lowered and I have a low seat. My 6ft husband rides my bike ocassionally and hates the screen but then the whole bike is all out of kilter for him. He found the screen really noisy and annoying.
Anyway it's not his bike so all of that doesn't matter!!!!!

Anybody out there with the BMW Touring screen who might be able to elaborate on your experience with the said screen?
I have finally been able to locate a new screen with all the necessary brackets and screw sets, but was wondering how it compared to other offerings, performance wise?
I personally like the shape of the screen, and the bracket to help with stability.
The question then, if money was no object, would you buy the BMW touring screen again?

TIA :thumb2

Edited to add: I am 6ft short...

I'm 5'9".
Takes the wind off the chest. The sweep back of the screen directs the air straight at my visor resulting in more wind noise but the flow is not turbulent. It also means because of the resulting smoother and more directed flow over the screen, I get more bugs directly on my visor now :eek I'm now looking for a Laminar Lip to help redirect the airflow......

Would I buy it again.... I dunno... as I haven't tried or seen the other screens... but I like it's looks as it screams pure BMW at you, that reason alone might be worth the re-buy..... :augie

Hi, Freeloader:
I got the extended touring version. Sfunny they don't include it on the drawing you show. It measures 420mm. It's the one shown in the photos on their website. They are very prompt replying to emails (they start work 1am BST!)

Hi Keethy, thanks. That does seem odd, I assumed they'd at least show all the variants they sell! Or it could be me, might've missed it. Might just email them and try and get the full story...:)

Thanx for the info blackie. :beerjug:

I have the 800GS screen, and the wind hits me by the throat/shoulders.
I have compared the touring screen with the standard 800gs by holding them together, and it seems to be only wider and marginally higher.
Maybe I should shop around a little more.

Check out Keethy's and other posts in this thread for the Eagle screen, it looks rather promising and seems high enough for the 420mm version.:)

TT Screen

I got my screen from TT in Germany last week.
Ordered on the Monday and it arrived on Friday morning!

It's a huge improvement on the original 650 screen. The wind blast has moved from my chest to the middle of my visor, which is where all the bugs end up.

The downside is that there is a considerable increase in wind noise, especially if I open the front vent on my helmet [ system 5 ].
I think if the screen was about 2 or 3 inches taller it would improve both bug and noise problems.
Has anybody any experience of screen extensions?

Hi All
I now instaleld GiVI - was ok but a lot of buffering around my shoulders and
Metal Mule - looks the part but is just 2 -3 cm to low ( angle air flow to my visor) so my head is constantly on a downwards angle when doing motorway rides. I found the Wunderlich screen witch seems to look what it is suppose to do. Trying to find a UK dealer to get them.
So, Anybody want to by Metal Mule ( dark tint) screen? Only used once and is basicially Brand New. new price including postage is £85. I Will sell for £65 for quick sell. Please let me know.

I ve tried TT screen, not satisfied - i am 178 cm tall, wind angles right to my visor. I also had problems with handlebars (rised 2 cm + Touratech hand guards) - they touched the visor in maximum right / left position.
It s very loud if all the wind hits the visor!

Now i would like to try Wunderlich ergo - thry have got two models - 420 and 465 mm, writen on web site small one is for people up to 175 cm.

How tall is TT screen in cm, i allready returned it back. I need to compare - TT screen with TT extension did the job and send all wind over my head. I need screen in same height.

I also find the screen on the 800 very small, from what I read here, I chose to order the "powerbronze" screen.
I bought a BMW touring screen for my wife´s 650 and its better than the original one on the 650, but not a lot better than the original one from the 800, because its curved down at more o less the same higt as the 800.

I read the the 800 screen is ok for traveling at 140 - 180 km/h, it might be because of my helmet but I find very unconfortable riding above 120km/h.
and feel the bike to be very light to ride over 160km/h, to ride at those speeds I think the 1200 are better.

I think the screen will be here in about 15 days, as its been made now and it will take 7 days to be made.
After I have it in place I will post my opinion abou it

Screens - had 800GS since April. Basic screen too low. Got TT add on, ok but not brilliant. Eventually found great screen from Nippy Normans so much better protection not too high but high enough to tuck in behind on fast motorway rides. Its that bit wider at the bottom so helps reduce buffeting. It has a grey smoked tint which goes well with the magnesium. No extra frame needed attaches to existing fittings. BTW I am 5ft 10.

Hope this helps

Hi All,

The screen I ordered from powerbronze, arrived today 4pm.

It´s not the same quality as the BMW screen, the transpanrancy of the screens are diferent, the bmw is more crystal and the powerbronze seems to be less scratch resitant.

I have changed the screens, it took about 10minutes. The powerbronze screen in place is a bit twisted its just a few mm, but can be noticed.

The powerbronze screen cost me on the bike 140€, the bmw screen for my wife´s 650 cost me on the bike (done at the dealers)350€ it looks better its a pety it does not work as expected and is to expensive.

Haven´t gone for a ride, so dont know if it feels better. I'll try it tomorow.

Just FYI. I'm 172cm and have the PowerBronze screen on my F 650 GS. The wind hits my vizor, exactly in the middle (BMW System 5 helmet). As a result, windnoise is increased considerably, BUT I can comfortably ride with my vizor open just one notch, even in 5 °C temps. The noiselevel is brought down with earplugs.

Hi All,

Went to the dealers today to put on the tck on the bike. The dealers are about 65 km from home.

A funny thing I noticed with the powerbronze screen is that the noise is much worse than it was with the facory screen, but regarding the bugs it's better - less bugs on visor.
The noise is very loud, its so loud it hurts my ears. But if I stand up, the noise goes way, I can feel the wind blowing but the noise is much lower, I tried this a few times at 100/110 km/h and I feel that I might change the screen for the 650's mini screen but with this screen I'll be getting all the bugs on my face.

Normaly I dont drive faster than 140km/h dont feel confortable driving at higher speeds(because of the noise mostly and the bike starts to feel light). I taught that with this higher screen I would go faster more confortable, but it wasn't so know the noise around 100km/h get's so loud I have to slow down.

Thought about adding one of the TT screen spoilers on the top? Plenty of breeze in the summer, less in the winter :) And the non-locking one is about £70, which is probably less than a new screen.

I had a 650 (single) Dakar with the BM screen, lots of breeze, but no visor misting. Had a tall Isotta screen, no breeze but the visor was more prone to misting up. But if it did, you could open up the visor and get rid of the misting.

Candidate for tallest screen

I have just received one of the Cee Bailey 20" screens for the F650GS. The Givi is simply too short for me at 6'. I am unlikely to get the new screen installed before the weekend and weather forecasts are not particularly promising for lengthy test rides. I will try to post a photo with initial impressions. Their website offers several alternatives. www.ceebaileys.com/bmw/650gs_twin_ws.html

I tried the Metal Mule (aka Powerbronze) screen last July but was dismayed at the increase in buffeting and wind noise, so I ended up buying the BMW High Touring Screen.

Having returned from a 3000+ mile tour of Morocco, I am actually quite impressed with the screen. It does a great job of keeping the wind from the body whilst keeping the helmet in clear air. It's even better at high speed when I shift my feet to the rear foot pegs and sustained high speeds are extremely comfortable. The aluminium strut is probably cosmetic but it looks the part and I was able to mount my visor washing bowl on it. :)

One problem, however. In remote areas I like to ride either with an open face helmet, and sometimes even without helmet with just protective glasses. I have a weeping problem with my right eye and with the BMW high screen in conjunction with the Airhawk saddle, the wind catches the eye and makes things difficult. Maybe if I had the BMW low seat things would be different but the F650GS is low enough already.

Riding without helmet

Anyway, I have now sold the BMW screen.

I have the MM screen now. I'm 5'7, i have an 800GS with low seat. I think its a vast improvement over the original. I have a tour x and yes, you still get a bit of wind on the peak area. I find it quiter though. On body hardly any wind at all. I can lift my visor half way up to de-mist with no wind getting in at all.

All this screen business is horses for courses. If it suits your height/helmet/seat etc go for it. What might be ace for one may be crap for another. But at the MM price it's worth a go. Myself, I'm chuffed to bits with it.

As someone said before. If you dont want wind, get a car....

I am not sure I have seen this discussed already but I couldn't find it in the thread. Has anybody tried to combination of the TT screen and the 20mm TT handlebar risers? Are the handguards or the levers hitting the screen when turning completely left or right?

I got a person I know who is selling his TT screen at 50% of the price, but I have the risers and the OEM handguards, so not sure if the screen works in combination with them.

many thanks

I have this combo and yes the TT hand guards hitting the screen because of the 20 mm risers. This is not such a big problem as long as you don't go of road and do this with the force. TT hand guards are plastic but is a different story with OEM hand guards and I think they can damage the screen or plastics holding it, because they are not that flexible as TT

Hi Keethy,

Just about to take delivery of my F800Gs and know i'm going to need a bigger screen. From your reports and reading everything everywhere else, it seems the Eagle Screen is the way to go.

Just one question, with the extended touring screen do you still look over the top of it or are you looking through it? I'm 5'11" and have ordered the lower seat, just not sure that i want to be looking through the screen.

Many Thanx
Mark B

I wouldnt have thought you would be looking through it, even with the lower screen?

Ive just had the er...opportunity  to ride home in the rain (30 miles) with the new screen and i must say im very very pleased with how much crud it keeps off me! well done Metal Mule:thumb
