► Alternative screen options

Think i've gone full circle...

A couple of time's i've switched between the Metal Mule and stock screen just to see which is better for me to live with - another 5'7" rider.

On the Metal Mule screen I get better body protection from wind and rain. This is offset awful wind noise and i can't ride with my visor up because of the turbulent air around my head/helmet.

With the stock screen it's less noisy - as shown by fewer false triggers on the Autocom and peaceful (in low wind conditions) with ear plugs. However, i do get wind on the top of my chest (maybe good peks by August!) which could make it no fun when it rains (to be confirmed!). I can ride at slow speeds with the visor up but get a fair amount of wind resistance on my arm when adjusting the tinted visor on my C3. At the moment, it's a much better option for me than the MM screen.

Still looking for something with better protection (anyone have a touring screen i could try?), but will enjoy the summer and start actively looking again in Autumn.

Swopped my metal mule screen for Bryn's 650 screen. Thanks Bryn. Wind blast now hits me at chest level as I'm riding an 800GS with an even lower screen than standard and I'm 6'5" tall. Now nice and quiet when I'm riding, as my head is in air that hasn't been stirred up by the screen. Down side is no protection from the elements, and my shirt size will probably go up from a 16" collar as I will develop huge neck muscles.

Put the MM screen on Lyn's 650... she likes it :thumb Thanks Martin and I hope you get used to the small screen:)

I had a ride on it and at my height (5'9") with the factory lowered bike the turbulance wasn't a problem...

I think no matter what you buy its never going to be perfect... the 1150 GSA never was, the 1200 isn't...

Consequence of riding something that isn't particularly aerodynamic. I have noticed a difference though depending on which helmet I wear

System 5 quieter than a Shoei Multitec ;)

I did some experimentation yesterday with my screens. Having seen Martin's post and ridden with the metal mule screen for 9 mths, I thought I'd ride without a screen. It was such a vast improvement and I then realised that I'd actually been putting myself through it for all this time, even with ultimate ears. I then put the OEM screen back on the bike and found it to be better for me than the MM one, even if it doesn't quite look as good on the bike. At 6"1' and with a TourX helmet, the MM just doesn't work for me sadly, so I've given first dibs to a mate and if he doesn't want it, it'll be on here.

Until then, I'll stick to the OEM one until someone else my height (read Martin;) ) gives thumbs up on a new one.

I'm 5'10" and the OEM screen gave me neckache on a long, high speed journey.
The MM screen relieved the neckache but directs the windblast towards the top of my visor increasing the noise levels.

What to do for the best? :nenau

I'm 5'7" so if you being 3" taller and the wind hitting the visor i'd guess it would possibly hit the top of my helmet, but, would i then get the noise effect from behind the screen? Decisions, Decisions.... Dont want to waste money on different screens but on the other hand over 55 MPH and mine is terrible!!! :nenau

You can buy the spoiler somewhere!

There's a picture on this tread somewhere of one?

From a recent enquiry to HPS;

"We can supply the spoiler, but we should point out there is no guarantee of performance on a non-MRA screen.

Also extra care should be taken as MRA screens are made from PlexiGlass and are more flexible than other brands making them less prone to cracking or shattering when drilling or higher load is applied.

This aside, the VTA 3 Spoiler is available in Clear or Smoked Grey, current price is £56.33 including delivery, approx. 2 weeks.

You can place your order by phone or online by using the following secure link...

Please contact me again if you have any more questions.

Best regards

650 Twin with MM Screen

Just purchased the MM screen from Nikp, fitted it to my 650 and went for my 1st decent run with it Sunday (17/5) for me it is a vast improvement than the standard screen, not reallymuch quieter but when i accidentally went over the National it was a lot less buffeting, BTW i'm 5'8" ... I my opinion it was money very well spent.
Heres a couple of pics, i think being tinted makes the look even better :augie

MM Screen

MM screen looks good on the 650 :thumb

Got my standard screen back on whilst I wait for my new one.

Doesn't look anywhere as good as the MM screen

I bought this screen from Tom Murphy on this site and it already included the mra spoiler. For me it is perfect. I can ride with an open face helmet and know I'm not going to get hit in the face by a 130km/h fly :eek

I've also just fitted one of these screens to my 650GS Twin, and it's fantastic! :thumb2 Bought from MM direct.

At "legal" speeds over your UK speed limit it's great.. A slight bit of vibration, but at 100mph+, I'd sort of expect it. The wind and/or rain is no longer an issue for my body. I would however say that the helmet 'rush' is slightly louder, but as I wear earplugs, it's not really an issue for me and I'm 5'8" :)

MRA Screen

Saw some posts a few weeks ago from people who had ordered MRA Vario screens. What's the verdict? How do they compare with the OE screen and the ever popular Metal Mule option?

I've got one on order with them at the moment. The screens are not in the UK yet but should be here soon so will post report / pics when it arrives.

I actually went to their office in Derbyshie whilst I was passing and had a look at one from another bike - very impressive product, particularly for offroading as the chap demonstrated the party piece by jumping up and down on it and it retained its shape with no cracking, crazing or marking. The only thing that would give is the vario mechanism but spares are readiliy available. They are made from the same stuff a fighter plane canopies apparently :nenau so should be good enough for the 800GS and in in particular the faster yellow and black variant:rolleyes:

Looking forward to getting it:thumb2

Tried again the following on F800, with low seat, I'm 5'11.

MM, awful, so much noise!!:blast

Stock, well Ok, if I were to stand up just by an inch or two, head is in clean air, no noise.:toungincheek

No screen at all, what you would expect, at 60 fine and a little air pressure, the faster you go the more you have to hang on.:weights

I've decided to basterdise some redundent clear plastic in the form of the stock screen, but to make it shorter than stock, by about 10cm, so it's just over the instrument cluster :idea

PS,
After a 200 mile ride in various levels of rain from showers to full on thunderbolts and stair-rods (end of the world conditions!!), why is it that with so called (HG) Goretex clothing, which is fully washed and proofed with the correct kit, you still end up with a wet bum / crotch ?:nenau:blast

Just got the BMW touring screen from eBay but doesn't fit as well as I was hoping. The metal bracket sits on the 2 square nut inserts on the beak as it has no recess for them like the standard plastic ones. Is this normal or am I missing a gasket? I phoned coopers who said there were no gaskets!

Also the screws only go up so far then just spin on all the screen fixings, is this right? Yea I defo have all parts listed it's just it doesn't sit flush onto the beak (the metal bracket) it sits on the square metal captivated nut that comes through the beak about 5mm resulting in a gap. That can't be right surely???

Tim Cullis said:
According to the fitting instructions you remove the square captive nut and replace it with the round bolt and nut which come with the new screen.

However... after a couple of thousand miles I started to get cracks in the plastics where the round nuts in the square holes are seated and after some moans I ended up with new 'tank' panels under warranty.

I then sold the screen.

Tim

Thanks tim, that's what I needed to know but now what would you suggest? I could remove the square ones and put nuts on the bottom or do you think I should leave them and make up a rubber gasket if I can find something thick enough??

All advise welcome as I really like the look of the screen and haven't found anything better. What are you using?

Tim Cullis said:
I wasn't impressed with the BMW screen, so I bought an Eagle screen which including shipping from Australia was about £90.

I bought Tim's screen and it is great for me on the 800gs 7,000 miles no cracks.

Wunderlich Screen

Although its mentioned as a possible alternative nobody on here has mentioned whether they have fitted a Wunderlich screen to their 800GS or 650GS. As some people don't seem overly impressed with the MM screed I though I might give the Wunderlich go but its alot more dosh than the MM screen.
I had a Wunderlich on my old F650GS single and it was great so I'm hoping they've got it right on the F800GS as well.
Any views on the Wunderlich would be great.
