► Bashplates, crash bars and other protection

I like them, so I'm leaning 60/40 towards getting the AS plate/bars against BMW plate/SWM-Givi-TT bars.... but still interested in what they all look like on a 650

Hey Jon,

Did you snap photos of the other side, showing how well the A-S bars keep the plastic protected? Curious about that, haven't tipped mine on its side yet.

Still waitin' for Wonky's thoughts on the non-coverage of the cat. I'm sure they've got a good reason it doesn't go back as far as the TT plate...

They protect so well that even the handlebars don't touch the ground


I'm glad the bash plate doesn't go as far back as the CAT. I'd be inclined to have another piece of metal made up that attaches to the centre stand thus completing the jigsaw that would cover the complete underside.

When you fitted the Ortleibs... did/do you have a pannier rack to hold them off the silencer?

I'm considering making up a heat shield of some kind for mine...

I bought the SW Motech EVO panniersracks. no hard cases yet. They keep the panniers well enough away from the pipe. SW Motech also provide a stick on reflective heat shield for any panniers.

It has been so cold it is hard to tell what the situation would be like on a 36c day in Italy for instance.

I am planning to have some alu made up as a heat shield/ fuel holder combo with the panniers thrown over them.

Looking at these 2 pics you wouldn't have to remove that much material from the GIT plate for the bar to fit:

I ve mounted Remus exhaust pipes, but i had to remove Touratech crash bars and engineguard (bashplate). Pipes are bit wider, so crash bars and engine guard does not fit.

Are there any aftermarket crashbars and engine guard that fits together wit Remus pipes?

MY BMW supplied bashplate got a bash this last w/e. It's not surprising, as I was going over some rocky Welsh stuff at the time. What does surprise me though is that a weld split. A welded seam just cracked along about an inch of weld. The bashplate itself doesn't seem to have been bent or otherwise distorted and I do think it protected the exhaust headers which are slightly scratched - presumably from the bashplate contacting them.

Now I wonder whether I should get the thing rewelded or whether it's a warranty thing that I should complain about. Someone told me that that unlike most metals, ally gets softer when welded and it shouldn't crack. I have no idea frankly but do feel a bit pissed off that the thing didn't just bend a bit.

Makes me wonder if I should commission one in SS? OK, it would be heavier but only a pound or two.



Mine has done the same thing - I haven't yet talked to the dealer but shall be doing so soon. I believe they should bend rather than crack if they hit something.

This is really a no win situation. If it is soft enough to bend then the crankcase its protecting may be damaged. You may have to look at like a shear pin, which breaks to protect the drive line. Only you tell us how hard the impact was.

Can anyone tell me if the SW-Motech bars will fit okay over BMW's wind deflector kit? The F800GS is my first bike and having dropped it once already (stationary outside my house ) I really want some additional protection for the plastics...

Pimp my 800

I really must stop having time off over christmas. On those long winter afternoons what else can one do but cane the debit card...



Now fitted Adventure spec crash bars and bash plate and just got the Adventure Spec rack plate fitted...



Also got the aftermarket centre stand from Nippys which works a treat and I've also fitted the Zumo/BMW power cable from Nippys which at £30 is rather pricey but really does neaten the job up.

Still on a mission not to fit any TT stuff and thanks to Adventure Spec et-al it's coming along quite nicely.

Getting the Stahkoffer panniers fitted on 7 Feb so will post pictures when done.

Just fitted the BMW bars today

The Wunderlich were OK but I couldn't remove the BMW bash plate without removing the engine bars

I couldn't be arsed with this because going on a long trip I want to be able to change the oil and filter without the hassle

The BMW bars fit perfect, all holes align OK. They're quite slim and are just wider than the radiator, but then that's on plastic mounts with 'pop off' rubber grommets so the radiator can move. I have the rubber wind deflectors on the fairing edges and these prevented minor damage in a walking speed spill on sheet ice

I'm more concerned with the heavy duty crash bars that are available causing major damage to the engine casings in a spill ... so have gone the original equipment route

the BMW bars certainly wouldn't be my cup of tea as they wouldn't have protected much in the couple of spills i've had. the givi ones on mine are bent up some and being replaced by adv.spec bars. added to that, the givi bars are corroded to high heaven through the black paint all over, but i will miss their ability to double up as highway pegs on journey's. ideally i'd like to replace the bmw bash plate with the adv.spec one too, as mine has cracked along a weld. something makes me think that TT keep the better stuff for themselves and palm off the nonsense to BMW??

Adv-Spec Bash plate & engine bars on F650GS

Finally - due to other distractions/snow, was able to get the AS bars and bash plate that arrived before Christmas onto my F650 GS twin (at least Harleyquin did for me - ta!). First impressions - as per others - very solid and well-constructed. The plate looks scarily big when put next to a std BMW 800GS plate but looks right when on the bike.

The bars when fitted onto the 650 do have a 2-3 inch gap to the plastics but I don't find this a problem. A bonus is that I now have somewhere to hang my auxiliary lights.

My knees do seem to be close to where the bars fit into the top engine mount but I'll see how this works out when actually riding. I'm short (5'2" with 29" inseam and disproportionately longer femurs). Harleyquin's knees were above this area so no problem for him at 5'7".

A warning: if you are buying the AS plate and the AS bars then mount the bars before the plate - otherwise you have to take off the plate (turned into a pain 'cos one of the locktight'ed bolts wouldn't release ) to be able to access the engine bolts and fit the bars.

A comment: as others have noted although the build quality is superb the packaging (foam pipe insulation) left some areas of the bars unprotected and consequently there were a few scratches/ scuffs on delivery. This may have been addressed as my order was a while back.

All in all, can't wait for the snow on my road to clear so I can road test them (upright I hope).

Having looked at a number of crash bar options and some of the threads here, I am looking seriously at either Metal Mule or Adventure Spec crash bars for my F800GS and my partner's F650GS. Any thoughts on which to go with? Any experience of either product "in action"?

Vote for Adv-Spec

Up to now, i previously thought that they were the same, but i've now noticed there is an additional spar on the Adv-Spec ones.

I have the Adv-Spec bash-plate and read on the forums that there were come incompatabilities with some other bars, so it made sense to stay with them. Luckily i've not had to use them in anger , but they are easy to fit and are solid. A tip when installing would be to measure the bolts before fitting as some are close in size and it's a pain to find the incorrectly installed one...

Both designs are optimised to match the flow of the F800GS bodywork, it would be an idea to check what they would look like on the F650GS.

i looked for weeks and weeks pulling my hair out on which crash bars to get, i was just about to start making my own until i found those from adventure spec.

i ordered the bash plate and crash bars, fitting both the items myself i can tell you that the qaulity of the products is superb , fits well, good welds and my word they are strong. the F8gs has come down a little hard on a few occasions and i have bent the crash bars to one side clearing the raidator, straightening them was easy. if the centre support bar wasnt in between them (which MM dont) i would have sqaushed the radiator for sure. and if i had none at all then i would have been in some serious trouble!

IMHO - adventure spec all the way.

The Adv-spec bars are as thick as the bikes frame and the seams while not visible to the naked eye have been made in such a way that they follow the inside of the bar. By that I mean the seam does not twist around the bar in the way the seam on a toilet roll tube does. So on impact it will not unravel itself like a banana.

In combination with the bash plate and some TKC's they really do make the bike look fantastic!
