► Bashplates, crash bars and other protection

Ooooh ...

I was keeping quiet about mine.

Ok - My name is Greg and last month I fell off my bike.

Actually it was the last Friday of the bike show and like a tw@t I decided to use the quicker back-road route to meet my mates. I didn't see the slushed-up black ice until I was two thirds the way round the bend it was on (it was actually the semi frozen remains of a large puddle...) WhooooOOP .. I was off, and saw the bike do 2 or 3 pirouettes in front of me while I slid incongruously on my arse into the drainage ditch.

From the top ... Hepco & Becker engine bars, fitted the week before, first trip out... Brand-new Tucano muffs, fitted at the same time as the engine bars .. LHS winglet, now just a 'glet... £5.00 ammo box pannier - now nicely chamfered on bottom leading edge.

I've got to say that it could have been a lot lot worse - I was doing 35-40 at the time, and 99% of the damage was taken by my add-ons, the worst thing that happened to the bike was the LHS bar weight getting scuffed once the muff had worn through.

I stood up, nothing bruised but my pride - picked the bike up, no witnesses to my pathetic loss but heroic recovery... jumped back on the bike - turned round and followed the frost free route to Birmingham ...

I will try harder ...

Threw my 800 down the track over the weekend. no pics as no damage at all, well slight scuff on the bark busters. Just goes to prove what a good investment the adv-spec crash bars were, this pic was taken just before the get off.

Hi richie, Had a good ride from manchester to dent but did a big loop round the north yorkshire moors, seems to be the only place where you can ride within the law. lots of old roman roads. spent some time pulling her out of the snow near hawes. the 800 was very stable at 30-40mph along the hard pack tracks just a bitch to lift up after the get off.
would be nice to see more tossers up there!

shame on you! you should be scratching the paint off... not letting it fall off. I've yet to see any bars or panniers racks where the paint doesn't come off eventually.

Sand it down, get a satin black rattle can, spray it and just get on with it. Crash bars are there to be used. They are not museum pieces.

Hmmmm....I agree that bikes are not ornaments, however, I expect the paint on a brand new bit of kit to last longer than two months.....:eek

Put it this way, if the paint was falling off the bodywork I suspect you might have something to say to BMW.....:green gri

nope. I'd just get the same spray can. As it happens I have worn the paint off the frame near where my knees go and cant be arsed running back to BMW.

If said bars have been out on the salty roads and there was a tiny crack in the paint it would get in underneath it and peel it off. The paint is dropping off my SW Motech bars but I cant be arsed getting them powder coated for it to happen again so I just painted them in hammerite.

I'm too busy riding in the winter in far off lands to worry about a bit if minor paint peeling on a crash bar. Life's too short.
