It's time for me to invest in crash bars for my GS and I've narrowed it down do SW-Motech, Adv-spec or Metale mule. Adv-spec and Metal mule seems very similar, but it seems for me after seeing at pictures that the ones from Metal mule might have som more room for my knees than the ones from Adv-s. As I'm 187 cm tall and 35"/36" inseem I'm afraid my knees might touch the Adv-s bars. Does anyone know if the ones from Metal mule have more room for the knees? Other pro/cons experience for the metal mule crash bars?

Have just bought a 650GS and, before I drop it, I think I'll get some crash bars.

I've read all the posts on this site and, as I'm not going to take the bike off road think the choice is down to Metal Mule or SW-Motech - (Adv-spec look a bit too chuncky)
It seems the Metal Mule ones are about £70 more than the SW-Motech ones.
Do you get what you pay for or will the SW-Motech ones do the job?

Nippy Norman also has some Altriders on his website. Any views on them from anyone who's had them fitted?

I'd be very grateful for any advice as I'm going round in circles and need to make a decision soon before I go mad.

Having read this thread (took a while), I am going to order a G-IT bash plate from Adventure Spec (I already have their bars ... in just a week or so I hope to have the 800 to fit them on)

http://www.adventure-spec.com/shop/...il-git-f800-gs-f650gs-f650-gs-08/prod_95.html

I would like some protection further back on the underside and am thinking of the Touratec engine guard extension

http://www.touratech.com/shops/008/product_info.php?cPath=3_44_350&products_id=8019

Has anyone fitted both products together and were there any issues?

Also, does anyone have any thoughts as to whether the rear protection is actually needed off road?

I went with the Altrider combo.

and btw Hi guys..my first post I think.
Just picked it up last Saturday.
I did read somewhere Lava was fastest!

You didn't read it here. Everyone knows the grey ones are fastest!:D

a friend of mine is a clinical psychologist who happens to have recently published an article in the Lancet and BMJ, he has found that in F800GS owners,
100% of the none Bumblebee yellow and black owners suffer from severe and overpowering delusions.
Apparently it is treatable though, with a simple part exchange!:D

I have the Adventure Spec bars which are great bar and do look similar to the SW Motech, i will probably get the bashplate to match too.
The only thing i would be wary of (and did not think about till i fitted them) if you were ever unfortunate enough to have a head on or frontal hit make sure you splay your legs cos i think your knees are going to get smashed :augie My knees nudge the bars under heavy braking as it is.

I've got the Adv Spec bars too, and for a lanky bar steward like myself my knees are only just touching the bars... thus I can ONLY ride with my legs on the outside edge of the bars unless I want my knee caps to explode in the event of a collision... was considering taping a bit o' pipe insulation to them to force my not to tuck my legs in, also less punishing if I do hit them.

Crash bar / bash plate combo

Does anyone happen to know if the SW motech bars are compatible with the adventure spec plate? I need to buy both - am considering the ADV spec plate, but their bars look a bit too obtrusive.
Also, if the swmotech bars would definately save the false tank bodywork if the bike is dropped?
Cheers.

I had the adv spec bars and plate the main issue i had was with the plate (2 plates broke and 3 mounting brackets without any offroading) the bars seem fine the only concern i have is that the powdercoat on the crossbar seems very thin and compared with the protection bars. I now have adv spec bars and twalcom plate which i am very happy with

My Holan pannier frames are rusted to buggery as the coating is coming away. I took the chance to get my crash bars re-coated, where I've rubbed them on the ground. With these off for the first time in 3 years, I took the opportunity to clean the engine.

When looking at the bracket which holds the front of the Git bashplate to the engine, I found a crack around one of the bends, about 80% through!

Has anyone else come across this?
