► Chains, oilers, sprockets

I don't know if what I'm experiencing is chain slap, but that was the expression that came to mind. When the bike is neither accelerating nor decelerating there's a slapping noise from the chain area and a vibration through the right foot rest.

I mentioned it to the dealer before the 600 mile service and I happened to watch (through the customer viewing window) the mechanic carefully checking the chain.

The noise continued. I put the bike on the centre stand and ran it in gear and the noise level is frightening (to me). I checked the chain play and found it exactly per spec. I've also fitted a Scottoiler system.

OK, I'm a bit more reassured. But as I explained above, it's not due to being in the wrong gear, it happens in any gear and at any speed when the chain is not under tension.

Having already done 1200 miles I'm very aware of the gearing. The 650 is geared about 10% higher than the 800, so with its close ratio gearbox is horrifically overgeared in first and second.

I'll stick my earplugs back in, which is a shame as the exhaust note is so lovely.

Mine has only just started doing this. Pretty much from when I crossed from Hungary to Austria. Its very noticeable now and has me concenred about the final leg home. I have a stop in Bochum tomorrow and London on Thursday.

I'll either put my earplugs in and forget it or take it easy and keep an eye on it

Its a worn chain guys- uneven wear means the chain is under different loads and causes vibration , 13500 miles and a new chain later and mine sounds a sweet and as quiet as the day i bought it.

front sprocket?

howdy all, real dumb question this one, butwill be doing the chain and sprockets soon on the panzer. trouble is, is the thread on the frontsprocket nut undone clockwise or anti clockwise? :nenau done the job before on other bikes and have the tools, just dont want to strip the thing!!!

Chain break problems

Bought 5k F800GS at weekend from Newcastle. It had new chain under warranty 2 months and 200 miles ago after the original broke. Got as far as Glossop and ping...inner side plate broke. I have spent about 4 hours this morning reading every available web forum thread on this issue (both sides of the Atlantic) and have come to the conclusion that a new DID x-ring or similar, even at my own expense, is a better option than waiting for my local dealer to replace it under warranty with some cheap rubbish I can't rely on.

Thanks to all those of you who posted about this issue for helping me identify the problem - BMW sadly cutting corners on quality! Both SOS Motorcycle recovery drivers (many thanks to Steve and Gareth) said that they now get more calls to recover BMWs than any other make - what a pity!

On the plus side I had six hours of fun crossing Northumberland and the Dales by small A and B roads and find the 800 far better for that sort of thing than my old R1200GS. It is lighter, smaller and more agile and seems to accelerate and hold speed just as well thanks to a similar power to wait ratio. Pity they didn't design it with a lightweight shaft drive!!

Smoking Scottoiler

I had a Scottoiler fitted last week and since then when I start it up (after about 30 secs) smoke starts pouring from the exhaust just under the front sprocket.

My instinct says this isn't normal, any ideas why this might be happening?

Is the wee pipey thing that dispenses the oil on the front sprocket or the rear sprocket? If at the front the oil could be dripping off the chain onto the exhaust or bypassing the chain altogether.

If at the back it may be a leak or you are pumping too much oil when starting up and the little condom inside is pushing too much oil..... or simply too much oil dripping onto the chain and then the pipe....

Normal. Oil gets flung off at the front sprocket and onto the cat / lambada sensor.

Might be worthwhile checking the flow rate isn't too much.

Yep +1 with the last reply.

The flow rate is too high. The 1 drip per second seems a little excessive, mines backed right off to 1min 45s - 2 mins and there are still a few oil splatter marks on the number plate.

If its dripping, remove the plastic cowling over the front sprocket (3 bolts) and clear the oily muck out....job done.

Dont forget to back off the oiler remember.

It's quite normal.

It's as John says, the oil from the chain drops onto the exhaust and it just burns off when you first start up the bike.

It's not a problem, but what it does do is make the oil 'runnier' and drop to the floor which has peppered my block paving:blast

Thanks for the answers guys.

I'll have a read of the instructions and try reducing the drip rate and also remove the cover and try and remove as much residue as possible.

"Dont forget to back off the oiler remember.!" Huh?

I was also concerned because it looks like the connection bit on the side isn't flush, hard to explain, if after altering the rate and cleaning I'm still having problems I'll post a pic.

I had this just before my 1st service and mentioned it to the mechanic, he changed my flow rate and it stopped straight away!:)

Bear also in mind that the warmer weather makes the oil runnier so you will need to alter the flow rate as the temperature changes significantly.

Less than 2k miles on my 09 F800GS and the chain snapped this morning when riding sympathetically on tarmac. Worst bit is weather is great for riding but BMW assist can't fix it (would invalidate warranty) so it has to go to dealer which means two days off the road as it's Bank Holls. :( Has anyone managed to get a better quality chain fitted under warranty by paying the difference?

my dealer said he would fit my own chain on it if i took it down to him
get rid of that shite BMW one and get a D.I.D or I have an iris gold on my bike miles better
I got my local off road place to fit my iris one after having two BMW ones

No such luck, I got 12000 miles out of the original and then paid for a proper DID chain, which hasn't stretched like an old elastic band 2000 miles later, ive kept it well lubed but then so was the original bmw one.
