► Fuel efficiency, range and octane questions

61 miles to go and not even the reserve light on. it's died several times in the 50's. i now set the trip meter and fill up every 175 regardless.

beat this..!

recent trip to croatia on my 650, fully loaded, did over 3000 miles and averaged just over 71 mpg (real figures, not bike computer). one stage i did 250 miles before the fuel light came on and filled up at 285 miles with 16.3 litres.
owz that..!

is it just the top hose - one end?

Hi guys
Your opinions please.
I took mine in for service and asked them to change the clips (I took in 4 jubilee clips) while they had it as I could see the top one coming off.
When I picked it up they had only done one. I was annoyed as I had asked for all four to be done.
Their explanation is that it is only ever the top rear attachment that is a problem. Is this the case??
On the way home the next day ran out of fuel overtaking at 70 with the fuel indicator reading 40 miles to go … fortunately no major mishap, busy road, lorry squeaked past with a car overtaking it, A34 no hard shoulder.
So took it back in today. They seem not to be aware of others having this problem yet I have read about it for weeks on here. BTW I've had no problem with the fuel gauge til they serviced it on Tuesday … done 6000 miles.
Your thoughts appreciated.
Catherine.

...both problems are well known to BMW, if your dealer is not helping you, try to be more "angry" and mabye call BMW directly. They should change everything for free, it s a new bike and you have guarantee to production bugs...

It happened to me again last week with 50 miles to go... it just keeps getting worse. I was right outside the American Embassy in Dublin :aidan and the guards looked twitchy. It was dark and we were all in black so I can see why. Imagine if we'd been taken down with deadly force all because the damn F800GS fuel gauge is totally useless :mcgun

That would have been a nice story.

I never use the fomboard computer anymore, at worst I have run out of fuel when the computer says 20 miles to go....

I took mine to the limit when I first had it and it managed several miles past empty, and had a similar incident in France in August.

But in recent weeks it's been optimistic to put it mildly. I ran out of fuel on the M25 with the range showing 16 miles left--this must have cost BMW a pretty packet in recovery costs.

Then a couple of weeks ago I was tootling along in Morocco at Enfield Bullet speeds and had done 282 miles with the range showing another 39 miles (total 321 miles). But when I filled I couldn't get more than 16.5 litres in the tank which means I must have just over a litre left. So I reckon the gauge is out by about a litre.

I thought the tank was 16 litres?

If you are starting with an empty tank, and fill the bike with it leaning on the side stand, you can get more than 17.5 litres in the tank. You need to go slowly on the last bit, but not difficult.

as anyone taken the filler tube out and drilled a hole in the side of it? a GSA 1200 rider mentioned something about that on here and said you can get extra fuel in.

Cracking good tank range!

just thought id add my recent experience with tank range.

Whilst doing a mixture of fast A roads and motorway ive just clocked up 216 miles on one tank before the fuel level light came on giving the F800GS a potential 256 mile range!!
Awesome!

Anyone else getting this?

298 mile mix of road, motorway, A roads and in the city with Rapid Bike and I like open the throttle :)

298!!!!!! brilliant! was that all the reserve and filled whilst on the centre stand?

Rapid Bike?

dont count on it... see the related fuel gauge issue or take a spare petrol can. The reading is not accurate.

so I hear :), actually I always fill it up when there is 100 km left according to the comp. Before installing Rapid Bike I could ride 250 km and there was 100 km left, after I put RB I ride 320 km and there is still 160 km left. When I will fill it up again I'll check if this is accurate reading. Even if the computer is wrong I'm making 100 km more on one tank so it's min 5L

How large is your tank? I only get 280-290 km on ca 17Liters..., without Rapidbike.
