► Fuel efficiency, range and octane questions

Is that as displayed on the OBC, or did you do the calculations? I tend to view the OBC's readouts as approximations.

But if those are figures that you've worked out yourself, I'm impressed. I hope I get the same result. :thumb2

My best was 196 miles (on the trip) showing 8 miles to empty then it took just over 17 litres

The total miles came from the trip meter, from fill-up to cough-cough ... the OBC gave the average figure, but it would be interesting to do a 'real-world' calculation as well... Did I read somewhere that the fuel tank is 17.5 litres to dry?

Interestingly, after my last software update the average mpg went from 49 up to 58 though ...

Greg

Greg:
Do you happen to know the version number of your last software update?

I'm a bit peeved that there is no good way for owners to compare the current installed version to the latest available version...........

Thanks,
Jim

Just had a few days bimbling around the coast with me mate - he likes to look at the scenery, so we were just gently chuffing along between 30-50 depending on the road.

15 miles per litre average.

67mpg:bounce1

Managed to fill up in Nottingham yesterday and make it to Jedburgh, not hanging about (much). Rolled into Shell at Jedburgh with 1 mile showing on the gauge, and managed to squeeze 16 and a fraction litres in after almost exactly 200 miles on the trip - about 57mpg, so a potential tank range of 214 miles.

But that's better than a previous trip on the M6 when I ran out at 198.9, despite the range remaining showing 8 (or maybe 18) miles left. I think I prefer my range counter in its new pessimistic mode...

I'm about to start construction of a carrying system for 2 five litre containers... :D

Some people really shouldn't be allowed out unsupervised.........:augie

.......possibly fitted to the adventure spec bars?????:augie

Don't have any Adventure Spec kit, my bars are SW-Motech, and no, not there...

Did mention what I'm thinking of to a couple of folk at the HU meeting this weekend, but it's not an original idea, and I've lost the link to that, although it came from a US site, I think.

The idea is to support the weight of the fuel in its container on the pillion footrest mounts. Can't think of any reason not to do this, since I never carry a passenger, and it keeps the weight about as low as it could be. Shouldn't be a problem finding places to brace the container to either. The idea's still in the planning stages so it'll probably not happen for a few months yet...

Perhaps you're thinking of something like this from BestRest?

I gave that idea a thought, but I decided that I didn't want to risk snapping my shins if I had to do a quick dab with my foot, or whilst paddling through sand.

That's probably what I got the idea from, the name's familiar.

Hadn't considered the likelihood of the "failed paddle and knackered shin" scenario though, although the method I'd considered wouldn't project as far forward as those.

:blast Time for a rethink...

Surely the pillion seat is as good aplace as any for it?

I'm surprised there isn't a bespoke single seat / fuel cell on the market actually, as I'm sure 10 litres would take up very little height if spread over the area of the rear seat, and with a wee spout it'd be very easy to refill the main tank.

Maybe I should design and patent the idea!?

For me it was 17.8 litres, see post #38 on this thread.

The F650GS continues to impress with its fabulous economy and a range that at lower speeds can exceed 280 miles.

When I was travelling through Spain with a mate on his R1150GSA, his typical fill bill was €30 against my €18. So riding the F650GS saves me the cost of each evening's 'menu del dia' meal with a bottle of wine thrown in!

Whats the most miles you've got from a full tank on your 650/800?

232 miles until it (650GS) ran dry this morning heading south on the M5 on my way to work in Bristol. The "range remaining" was showing 24 miles and the next fuel station was 6 miles away off the M32. I'd set off 15 miles earlier with 39 miles showing - so I was somewhat unimpressed at being stranded 6 miles short of where I was planning to fill up!

Over 3.5 months and 3000 miles the average (according to OBC) is 66mpg with a best of 69.7mpg and worst of 64.6mpg (both calculated) based on a weekly fill up and approx 210 miles between tanks. Off to polish my calculator now.................

Please put me right.
On my 800gs the fuel light comes on the display starts to count up in miles:nenau
