► GPS mounts/connections and Autocomm (consolidated)

DOH, as you can tell I'm new at this, thanks, I'd be grateful if you'd remove that map you just posted too!

Cheers

Help is on the way.

Interesting set-up Barnestour.

It's nice to see people doing things for themselves and sussing out different approaches, as opposed to just chucking money at a subject.:thumb2

I must get started on my plywood leg-shields.:D

I have a Garmin Nuvi 660 which like you I can hear up to about 35mph, I had a spare boat hand rail clamp that fitted between the handlebar clamps, then with a spare mounting and quick release bracket screwed to it; it works a treat!
I bought a Hella to Cigar adapter off ebay, but so far I've found the internal battery has lasted long enough for any journey. As for waterproof... I carry a spare sandwich bag and twist tie just in case.
I have the taller BMW screen and found with or without silicon the sucker system only stayed on for 1 to 2 days - also the tall screen gives a fair bit of protection to the handlebar/ignition area.

Garmin Zumo mount

It has the standard Garmin 4 hole mount, so I believe the mount is basically universal. Cost £45 :thumb2

Hi Andy. I have 2 questionsfor you.
When your Zumo is in position can you still see the speedo etc and if so where can I get one of the 4 hole mounting brackets, as Garmin do not offer it as a standard on their site.
I have an R1200RT that I use my Zumo on as well so I am tying to get a mount soughted for the GS.

Cheers mate,:thumb

I know that I am replying to my own post here but found this on Ebay for £49.99 plus £1.50 postage and I think that it is pretty neat.

Installing a Autocom L1 Logic Kit on a F800GS

Searching through the forum over the past few days , I have struggled to find clear instructions on how to install an Autocom Kit L1-Logic to the F800GS Can-Bus. Do I install it via the aux connector under the fake tank cover and store the Autocom beside the battery or do I setup the autocom in a tank bag and connect it via the external power source. Appreciate if somebody can provide the details so when I do this I don’t blow up the bike or myself. Thanks.

Not sure how relevant this is but I'm using an old 2006 Autocom Active-7-Smart on my F650GS.

I spliced a cable onto the spare canbus socket which is very accessible just under the false tank (this leaves the socket free should I ever need it!). I wired a separate in-line fuse just in case but it has never given any trouble.

The Autocom box sits nicely in the wee space just in front of the battery and all cables are long enough to run down and hide under the seat.

I also have a Zumo and icom radio cable wired to the Autocom.

Welcome to the forum!

Both the aux connector under the faux tank (primarily intended for GPS) and the aux power socket are switched power, i.e. only active when the bike ignition is on.

I don't have experience of the particular model of Autocom that you're using but I've found the easiest all round solution is to have the Autocom and all the gubbins I connect into it (bike-to-bike radio, MP3 player, mobile phone) in a small bag inside the tank bag. If you are careful not to make too big a hole you can run a cable through the bottom of the bag (before sticking the DIN socket on it), then just unplug the power whenever you remove the tank bag.

Thanks Tim, the tank bag sounds the better option, at least then I can remove everything when I park the bike at night.

What tank bag did you use on your F800GS?

I have the Kit 300 which sit's just in front of the alarm box under the pillion. This allows me to make adjustments (which i never do!) if i needed to. The power, bluetooth and rider headset connector run forward to the aux-socket and and i have installed a 7-pin headset connector on the other side of the aux-socket - i hated the dangling leads. I have a pillion headset connector mounted just behind the petrol cap.

You may also want to talk to Big Bird who has a Logic 1 installed on a F800....
