► Hard luggage--panniers and topboxes

I've not seen any, but did email Givi direct a while ago, I got a speedy reply from what seemed like the work experience girl, I did manage to extricate some part numbers:

Top box rack - E194
Pannier rack - PL690

I assume that any Givi boxes will fit these racks, to be honest though, from the the quality of the emails, I wouldn't take these as set in stone. As for an engine guard, no idea, feel free to email [email protected] good luck! :-)

Oh!! yes MetalMoneyMule want £300.00 and say they're in stock...must have a gold plate finish...

sorry i cant go for those sourght of prices :mcgun........must be firing duds

Well my Metal Mule panniers arrived today. It was a bit of a panic as we're off to Europe next week but they're here in the nick of time. Having expensive tastes, I opted for the powder coated ones in the small aka skinny size of 31L. I could easily fill the 45L size ( with just a bit more make up, hair dryer, toiletries, etc :D ) but was afraid I wouldn't be able to get the bike off the sidestand. It looks great and they are very classy panniers. These are the new series 2 and they do everything it says on the website.

I also got my Bagster "tank"cover so I can use tankbag I already have. It's rather neat and unlike other Bagster ones I've had previously as it only covers the central panel of the false tank. Its held in place in front by the two screws that hold the panel. At the back it goes under the front of the seat and then wraps around back on top & velcro's to itself. The metal loops for the rear fastners on the bag are down at the side of the seat. It's really neat. It's only available in black at the moment but that looks fine. Most of the bike is black anyway. Here's some pics.

Eight months ago I invested in Metal Mule panniers and top box as opposed to bike-specific luggage so that I could move the luggage from bike to bike. Metal Mule were considerably more expensive than Zega and other alternatives at the time but I was prepared to pay a premium for powder coated luggage and it helped that Metal Mule is local to me.

I now want to mount my Metal Mule topbox and panniers on my new F650GS, but the prices have gone through the roof:

- top box rack was £91.99, now £118.99 an increase of £27.00 (30%)
- pannier rails were £229.99, now £299.99, an increase of £70.00 (30%)

I told Paul Metcalf today that I felt aggrieved about this but he refuses to move on price.

This bloke Nippy Norman has got me into trouble again

now look what's turned up this morning this is going to cost me a meal out tonight :D

my first impressions as good as Touratech looks more robust than Mules
locking system looks good got to fit the locks as yet (key locks)
quick and easy to get on off bike
gasket round of Lid top to stop water
(don't know if that works yet)
corners have double protection I think the material is reflective

went for the silver as I liked the colour contrast sliver and black lids

so lets see the S w Motech Rails are very well made now fitted to bike will get some pictrures out soon spent about 2 hours fitting them on Friday afternoon
slowly slowly catchy Monkey
very easy to remove if you don't want to ride around with racks on all the time
made as well as Touratech stuff

problem I now have is I also have a set of Touratech spec set on way to :augie

What's the finish on the 'silver' bits, is it bare aluminium or anodised?

I see what you mean about wide, you won't be doing a lot of filtering. :) :)

Tim the corners are reinforced yep anodised

I think all the f800gs/650gs case system will be very wide due to the way the
back end flares out to hold the fuel tank etc
they are wider alot than handle bars so its not like the 1150gs when if the bars go the rest will

Thanks for posting the pics, Terry.
Very nice boxes! only thing is that the bike is really wide!

Are the TT boxes you have on order the 2x41L specially shaped for the F650/800? From the pics on the TT website they are much closer to the side of the bike, very curious to see one fitted!

Thanks!

John, thanks! yes i saw these pictures, but they do not show how the boxes are shaped on the internal side. I was interested in seeing the shape of the boxes, as well as the racks, which should be different.

TT claims this system is designed to carry heavy loads. it is the one they tested in Africa last year when they rode the 800 with some new accessories.

cheers

Hard luggage width problems

I'm sensitive to the width of panniers. On my 1200GSA I used to have BMW's aluminium luggage which is 1000mm wide. After changing to Metal Mule's 38/45 litre system last year I twice bashed the side of a pannier on a narrow piste, and subsequently bought a 31 litre pannier so I could run a 31/38 combo for offroad touring. When the 1200GSA is back from servicing I'll measure the width of the two combinations.

Anyway... the underseat tank really impacts the width of the rear of the F800GS and F650GS, it's 110mm (4.5 inches) wider than a 1200GS. The way the silencer sticks out (compared to the F800ST) doesn't help, if it was hoiked in a bit it would allow a few litres more storage.

- The BMW 800GS vario cases start at 920mm and are 1030 extended.
(810mm and 920mm on a 1200GS)

- Touratech's 29/35 system is 1018mm and their 34/41 is 1036mm.

- Trax 800GS 37/45 system is 1111mm.

- Metal Mule 31/38 is 1060mm, or 1000mm if the exhaust is changed.

Correction: The MM widths quoted are inaccurate, see later post.

Any thoughts?

my view

Tim,
I have been having exactly the same dilemma in the past days.
I am planning an overland next year in south america, where 60/70% of the route will be on gravel or offroad.

I have excluded the Trax because of the width, BMW's Varios because I am not sure they would stand the trip (but this is not based on facts, just my gut feeling), and excluded the MM because of cost (I saw another thread where you had a similar comment - their prices are too high!) plus i am not thrilled at the idea of changing the exhaust.

So that left me with the TT solution. I had a set borrowed last year (35/41) which i used offroad in Tunisia on my GS basic, and I have been happy with them, despite quite a few in the forum think their quality is not as good as others. But they worked for me.

But the 29/35 combo is too little volume for me (2/3 months around!) and so i just placed an order for the 41/41 (-7L !) also because in the end is less than 2cm wider than the 29/35.

The only drawback is that these are just for this model and will not be able to keep them in future, but this kit is still half the price of the MM (TT is approx 1000€, while MM balanced is almost twice including the pipe, which again will be unusable once i decide to sell the bike).

Cheers
Gianluca

The width of the under-seat tank is what has me considering soft bags instead of hard panniers. These low profile, waterproof saddle bags from Ortlieb hold 34 liters each, appear to be fairly easy to access while on the road, can be mounted high enough to clear the exhaust pipe, and combined with a good waterproof duffel bag may provide enough storage for a long trip.

They're not secure as hard bags, sure. But they're easy to remove, and I can't see myself enjoying a 1000 or 1100mm fat ass.

Interesting...

I've been using the BMW roll bag for the last year or so... and it really is a great piece o' kit :thumb

I'm waiting until the BMW alloy panniers come out for the 800GS sometime July/August and will then make up my mind as to which way to go on this one Tim. No doubt they will be a snug fit, top loading... and ideal for what I have in mind ... a Cape to Cape Caper

Woodworks: I have throw-over 'Oxford' soft luggage but the F-GS exhaust pipe is mounted much higher and wider than the bike in your picture. The top of the silencer is about the level of the bottom of the black buckle on the end of the Ortleib bag. And then there's the heat to consider.

Mickie: I'm using a huge top-opening Hein Gerike roll bag as an interim measure. But I'm amazed at the slow roll out of the accessories. At this rate the summer will be over before BMW and other suppliers are in full swing.

I appreciate you're not a fan of the BMW handguards, but at the moment they are on back order from Germany. The tinted 800GS screen is available, but not the touring one. I had the chance to ride my bike away from the dealership on 8 March; I'm extremely glad I delayed it three months otherwise I would be even less impressed.

Tim

I see what you mean, Tim. But since I'll probably be siting on an AirHawk seat pad, I'm thinking it might be possible to scoot the bags forward enough to clear the pipe, and run the front strap under the AirHawk. That option would certainly be a lot cheaper than any of the hard cases. It's worth a shot, anyway, as I can always send them back if they don't fit. :augie
