► Hard luggage--panniers and topboxes

Hopefully by early spring Minnesota will thaw out and I'll have those cases on my baby.

Met up with Bernie today to do a first fit. He reckons they should be ready January sometime.

Hi Santrix

Have been in touch with Bernie as well a few weeks back. Trying to weigh up the pros & cons between his and the Ard cases at present. For information it would greatly help if could you tell me:

1. Who's frames are fitted to the bike? Bernie's or another third party? and if the later, the cost.

2. If you have it to hand ..... the overall width of the set up on your bike.

3. The capacity of the boxes / and cost.

The frames are his own creation. Theres a couple of chages need making which i think they will do right after new year. (i suggested a bolt on mudguard extension onto the cross beam but not confirmed), there also maybe a luggage rack like the TT one but again not confirmed.

The width i could kick myself as its the one thing i meant to measure today but i was pressed for time and forgot.

The price, not sure yet, the figure of £400 all in was being banded around but you'd have to speek to Bernie.

One thing is for sure, because of the fat exhaust on the 80o its got a well fat arse for panniers.

There's no way around that one that I can see ..... :D

Think I'll hold fire until you're in a position to post some more photos of the finished jobby ...... looking good for the price, though! I need to get sorted with something for March/April time as I'm planning a very long overland trip not long after. Keep us all posted please.

The panniers sit just proud of the overall width of the handlebars. They are approx 31 & 29 liters capacity.
The price will be around £399.00 plus vat.
They will be available early January.

Couple of questions .....

Does your quoted price include/exclude pannier frames?

When you have time ....... an exact measurement taken across the fitted panniers would be good.

Pictures of left & right side of bike with just pannier frames fitted (I'm assuming they are not quick detachable! ) :D

What sort of lead time do you estimate from the placing of an order?

I will let you have an exact measurment taken across the panniers but I'm afraid it will be early in the new year. (I'm off to Italy shortly on business & not back until around
5th/6th January. But at a rough guess I would say they are no more than 4-5" longer than the handlebars.
The price includes panniers/frames/locks etc.
The frames are not quick-release but I don't think they spoil the look of the bike when they are on.
Delivery time from placement of order is about 3 weeks. Sorry there is approx 3 weeks waiting time but since the Bike Show we have been inundated with orders (hence this delay).

This is my bike recently fitted with the SW motech pannier racks and Ortlieb soft motorcycle panniers. The supplied velcro couldn't span the gap across the 800GS's wide arse without the panniers splaying out. So I bought some extra velcro and so now I have much more scope for positioning.

I was surprised that they swallowed a helmet with ease. I also managed to forget I had them on and whacked the left pannier off one of the concrete pillars as I squeezed through a gap I normally travel past when turning the bike around in my space. It had a bit of dust on it but other than that it was fine.

I have to say I am impressed. I don't notice they are there, they are super light and don't affect handling on the motorway. They are rock solid on rough terrain. :thumb2

BMW Aluminium Panniers

I may have missed this on this thread but can someone let me know the price of the frames and panniers please ?

I have seen part numbers but am intrigued as to the cost and AJ in Shipley aint open tomorrow for me to get a price !

Looking for a bit of advice.

I have a Ttech luggage plate on the back and all I am looking for is a decent sized container for the back. It doesn't need to be metal, but needs to be able to securely fitted to the plate. I don't see the need for the side panniers, as being an ex squaddie, I can survive without half my worldly belongings ;-)

personally I use Kreiga US-10 tail pack. I absolutely love it You can also use a US-20 and bolt two US-10's to its side for extra storage.

my current setup is two soft ortliebs mounted onto SW motech rack and a Kreiga US-10 mounted onto the adventure-spec rear rack. :beerjug:
 
The Kriega stuff is good quality, but I am looking for more space. Even the 40 Litre isn't really big enough. I don't want to stick side panniers on, as I think that they are bone looking, plus I'll only need them a couple of times a year.

Hmmm... I had been dead set on the BMW Alum panniers with small consideration of the MM, but these Jesse's do beat BMW by a few hundred and MM by a grand. While maybe not as aesthetically pleasing they are also far skinnier than BMW's at 940mm for 90L capacity Odyssey (or 838mm for 68L for Safari).

At this point of never ending deliberation I think someone had ought to just tell me what to do so I can stop burning brain cells over which will do me best.:eek
 
Alpos and Tubes

So I've mounted a couple of tool tubes onto the back of my alpos pannier. I might do 2 on the wider one too, but in the meantime, this'll do the trick. One of the problems with these tubes is that the contents aren't at all thief-proof. So, a couple of strips of metal on the lid of the box soon sorts that. I'll be using them for fuel (bike and trangia) and tools. Just going to take that crappy yellow writing off them.
