► Post pics of your F650/800GS

Hey tr5esu - I'm hoping to get an 800 in August (a few things to sort out first) and am dying to get it dirty as soon as I have it but I have no idea how to find the places that I'm allowed to ride off road.

How did you find the ones that are in your pics? Are you able to provide a link to a map or describe where the lanes start from?

I live in Cheam so figure since you're in Epsom, you were referring to a part of Surrey that is simple to get to from home?

Any advise or info you have is greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Hi Max,

The best thing to do is to join the TRF (the surrey group website is this www.surreytrf.org.uk ). There are runs almost every weekend around Dorking/Guildford which is where I took those pictures. I know the lanes pretty well so I can take you out when you get your bike. I would advise you to get some protection for the bike (and yourself!) before going hitting the trails though as a single slow speed fall can break your rad's mounts and much more!

You can also check where the public byways are in surrey from this interactive map http://surreymaps.surreycc.gov.uk/public/viewer.asp but you need to make sure you don't use the ones that are temporarily closed.

Cheers

Cheers - many thanks for the info - I have been browsing the TRF site and totally plan to sign up - glad to know its worthwhile.

Hope to see you out there soon.

I had the TT plate but after one trip around Europe the Alu has marked quite a bit. What you see now on my bike is the anodized prototype for the Adventure-Spec rear plate. There are some nice differences on it. The cut outs along the side run parallel to each other and don't splay out like TT's. This means straps don't go off at odd angles.

This version compliments the bike much better than the TT one. It also has a couple of punch holes which I've found are very handy for slinging a tool tube underneath the rear rack.

I have to say A-Spec have done it again :thumb2

Hi
Ages since you wrote this... but I have recently installed the same rear plate :)
I was wondering if you could post a pic of how you set the tool tube underneath.
I have tried to figure it out with a 80mm PVC tube but the tube
"hits" the black triangular top part of the back light
Thanks & cheers from Belgium

another off topic question, to all those that have taken the 800 off road, how did you find the acceleration pick up on the loose stuff?
Reason for asking is that I recently took one for a test ride (but not off road) and was really impressed,:drool but thought the bike really wanted to be off, even with little throttle, the slight bumps made riding through villages with crap road surfaces very jerky.:(
With that in mind, my concern is that would this be replicated off road and with my very limited off road skills I fear I woud struggle with the800 off road.:(

I currently ride a KLX 650 and feel ok ish :augie on the loose stuff and have also taken a 1150GS off road as well, most trips out usually involve tracks or green lanes of some sort and dont seem to have TOO many problems::P

thanks:thumb2

Hope this makes sense

There is a lot of discussion about this topic - most is on this forum http://f800riders.org/forum/showthread.php?t=20868.

Bottom line is that throttle response can be modified. With experience you will find less need to worry about it.

Hi Bernard,

in the end I moved it from the rear rack. I had it attached with cable ties but it looked untidy so I moved it and strapped it to the pannier rack.

The link above shows my bike at the Horizons unlimited event. You can click for a large picture. You can just see the yellow writing on the tool tube below the right indicator.

It's pretty safe there. Some people attach them to the front of their bash plate but I have seen them ripped off when off-roading when they are attached there.

cheers

Hi Jon,

Thanks for the feedback.
As I don't have no panniers (yet) no Crash bar (not certain that I want those) no bash plate (yet)... I am still figuring it out where to place that tube tool !

Be good :beerjug:

Bernard shove your tool tube here:-

Not done myself yet but easy to do and looks best place.

Hi Wookie

Thanks for the link, I had already read that full thread and decided that yes this would be the best way to go !
Have not done it yet cause I'm not sure that those bold are not used by the vario panniers fitting kit (in case I'll decide to for them)

The bike is soon due to the garage for the BMW recall, will ask then.

In the mean time, I'm just "thinking" about it :augie

Cheers

Dont know if the mounts will interfere with the varios, but I have just fitted a set of Trax with EVO frames and I had to make a few adjustments to move the tube to the rear slightly.

short video of small jump

This is a short video I took today. I have about 10 minutes of footage I took with the camera cable tied to the front peak of the bike (only a photo camera with video options), but the vibrations make it difficult to watch! Very dry and dusty out there these days!

Cheers

It's a bit bright. :)

It seems all 2010 bikes have the new spec chain (silver instead of black).

Within the first 35 miles however, the bike stalled twice, both times at lights. The second time I dropped it and scratched the bar end. :eek I'm wondering whether it has a recent fuel map...

Why don't BMW use that engine to build a true adventure bike that's robust and with top notch suspension along the lines of the KTM 640 ADV instead this latest 'commuter bike':nenau

The Africa Twin almost had it right as well yet the trend moves away to road orientation or naked offroader:confused::confused::confused:
