An update to this thread.

Whilst away in france, this reared its ugly head again.

This has been modded twice, and fixed a further 2 times. I'm really surprised that BMW haven't come up with a permanent fix. Usually when it goes, it's just a slight drip. This time it was pissing out. The nearest garage was a Peugeot car dealer who had nothing suitable, he sent us to a bike (Ducati) dealer about 10 miles away. This was the first time I've been able to properly see the problem.

My bike has been fixed now with a cut down Renault car hose (none of the Ducati ones were suitable). Hopefully, it will last this time. The hose has a slightly smaller diameter, so was forced on, giving me some confidence that it will stay there.

The problem with the design is threefold;

Firstly, the hose is actually too short.
Secondly, there is no flange around the pump outlet for the hose/clamp to grip on.
Thirdly, the stub outlet is actually tapered away from the pump, so tightening a bandclamp is actually helping the hose come off!

BMW would probably have got away with this if the pump had a proper flange. There is a 1/2" raised portion on the outside, but it doesn't go all the way round. Quite bizarre, and a really basic mistake.

I wonder why this doesn't affect all bikes?

I think it happens to most bikes. I had a lot of problems with my one. It tends to accur on longer trips IMHO. I had a loan of a newish 700gs the other day and I couldn't help noticing that the hose had moved already.
I eventually changed to a 1200gs, for more comfortable touring, but also because of this problem. You can see my earlier posts... Verging on the desperation!
It will be interesting to see if the non BMW hose is an improvement, it might be.

My mate has got one, same age similar mileage. He's never had a problem. Frustratingly, he's the kind of rider that 'just rides it'. He doesn't look at it between services.

Hi V8Legend,
That's interesting. I wonder does he do high warm mileages though. In my case most times I had problems it was touring Spain and Portugal.
As you rightly say, it's amazing that they haven't sorted this problem out properly.
I used the spring clip, black jubilee clips, the lot. Changed bikes finally after 22k kilometres!
Lovely machine otherwise.

:aidan

BMW really should know better and they should also have a handle on project managers who tick boxes to meet targets but allow crap like that to get out into the wild.

One option might be to use cycle tyre puncture repair adhesive to glue the hose onto the stub pipe. Let it set before tightening the clamp.

I must be one of the fortunate owners that has not had this issue occur..
Done 42k and in just over a week, we are heading off to Spain for three weeks fun in the sun...
However, after reading this, I'll carry a few jubilee clips, just in case my luck runs out :)

new top is about a centimetre longer than early ones, should really have been a recall for this. I bought mine early this spring, checked for outstanding recall with BMW and told none were outstanding. As I was taking the bike to France next weekend I gave the bike a very thorough check over and discovered the hose was just about hanging on. A replacement was ordered and fitted with nice new stainless jubilee clips.
Proper job.

This thread works! Well done to catch it in time. I can't believe that this problem is still happening when a simple redesign of the flange would suffice.
Wonder what the arrangement on the new water cooled 1200 gs is? Hopefully not like this.
You can relax in France cos the distance to having a problem with this pump is about 2000/3000k.
:clap

I wonder do the 2012 models still suffer with this problem or are they sorted

Mmmmmm. That's not good. Must take a look at mine. I have 15 thou mile done in a year so far with only issues being bloody steering head bearings. I hope this isn't going to be another issue

The earlier bikes had a metal water pump housing and later bikes or my 2012 has a plastic water pump housing. Maybe that has something to do with the pipe staying on for longer
