► Seats (too high, too hard, pillion...) and suspension

My friend with the Africa Twin tried it, and wanted to buy one immediately!

Now that I am back home, i have removed it, but after 40/50 kms i immediately notice i haven't installed, and am planning to put it back also for short rides.

I got the budget version, not the neoprene one, as it was too expensive, and I was not sure whether it was worthed or not.

Haven't found a Cruiser small around here in Belgium they only had the Cruise medium and large, thus bought the pillion small (11x9") for my GS. I thought that the medium (14x14) one was way to large for the byke.

I'll try it a bit more and see, otherwise I will sell it...

Do you guys have the 18"x12" small or the 14x14 medium ?

If BuMW have any sense they will fit this seat as standard. Just imagine how many more bikes they might sell. I knew within 10 minutes that the GS800 was not for me because my arse was hurting and some! Sat on an 800R and it was the total opposite... a treat.

£200 does seem to be a lot of money, but compared to the price of a Sargent.. is it? I am sure that each dealer will end up with a demo seat to put on demo bikes for comparison and it will appear as an added extra with all the other pricey extras and you are lashing out that sort of money, what's another £200?:rolleyes:
 
Is the original seat that uncomfortable? I find my 800GS loads better than my last bike, a Honda Transalp. It's no 1200GS agreed but then the 800 is a different bike, the narrowness and hardness certainly help when off roading.

As I said earlier I am not complaining of the standard seat. I have realised that If you riding position is to close to the false thank, yes it's quite hard in the long run but if you "slide" your bottom a bit to the rear it's all ok ;)
 
Comfy seat for 50 quid

Cheapest option, go to Tony Archer in Huddersfield. Had mine done for around 50 quid and he recovered / sculptered the original seat.
He said the seat is very hard for any sort of time in the saddle but he worked his magic, retained the good looks of the bike and didnt charge the earth !
All this talk of comfort seats from BMW is adding more to the BMW coffers, save your money & spend it on fuel :thumb2
 
bmw will give you a low seat when ordering new f.o.c. so why not a [comfort seat] ?, or will they do it for a new sale!!!

The comfort seat I ordered that should have arrived last week in plenty of time for my jaunt into Europe...........has been delayed and should arrive after the trip I wanted it for. :blast
 
F 800 GS seat

Hi im new to the site and BMW. I bought an F 800 GS about a month ago and have just completed a european trip 3000 miles. The bike was great but the seat took some of the fun out of riding. I set out with a cut down seat and bought a standard seat in desperation in France (£235.00) (I was really desperate). However this didn't solve the problem and after about 70 miles the aching was back.
Does any one have any suggestions (appart from buying a 1200 adventure) I cant raise the seat height the bike is tall enough as it is.
 
Lots of options: cycling underwear; have the OE seat remodelled and perhaps a gel pad fitted into it or, ultimately, but a custom seat from Corbin, Sargent, Renazco or Touratech/Kahedo.
 
Lots of info on here, also try fannying about with the damping. It made a big difference for me.
 
BMW seat

Just done 3000 miles on mine it was agony used both the standard and cut down.

Viking Vinyl replaced the foam in my seat with memory foam and the difference is amazing. I can now ride all day with no aches and pains.

Like you I found the seat a real pain after 45 minutes which was somewhat vexing having paid a shed load of dosh for a new bike. The airhawk has increased the comfort time on the saddle by at least another two hours between circulation stops resulting in only having to climb off the bike when I need fuel not because of a numb bum! The system is a series of air pockets designed for people who spend a lot of time sitting or lying down and does feel slightly strange at first. Be warned it will raise your bum up by at least an inch so if you are already verticallly challenged holding the bike up when stationary it might not be the panacea to your problem. The comfort factor really does make a long day in the saddle possible without subjecting yourself to hours of discomfort and the inevitable lack of concentration. For a shortish city journey with lots of stops I just leave it in the pannier . Sounds like you have already completed some serious miles well done.

what was the damage for that then ?
