► Seats (too high, too hard, pillion...) and suspension

why not buy a 650 in the first place?

always puzzled me why some short people (I'm short) bought 12oo adventures and then tried to lower them. seems to be all about appearance and street cred.

Hi
Not aviable on launch date, would not wait an other year, more power, was the main reason.
I usualy change bikes(buy new) once every year, have done for the last 10 years.
This bike I put some money into because it is a keeper, and the looks? I dont give a d---m,it fits me and does the job, handles nicely, run straight, good cornering if not exeptional all I want from a bike.
ps forgot the good brakes:thumb
If I was keen on looks,I would not buy anything but MV Augusta or Ducati .
cheers

The onboard system can see the speed of both wheels.....

Doesn't answer which (if either) it uses for the vehicle speed but I seem to remember that spinning the back wheel did not register anything on the vehicle speed indicator.

This would suggest the engine/gear may be used - I'm stuck in the cotswolds for the next few days but if no one comes up with an answer by the weekend, I'll check out all possibilities. :thumb

Well, thanks to BarryGS I now have the standard height seat on my 800 and its made a great differance in comfort yet not that much higher. I have only done around 50 miles (between downpoors) but I am well pleased.

Thanks again Barry and thanks also to Caroline (Barry's girlfriend) for lugging an extra case from Ireland to Manchester airport where we swapped seats.:beerjug:

TT seat

Yeah!

I changed the original seat with Touratech +2 cm comfort seat early in August.
It's worth every krone I paid for it.

The original seat was really bad, my opinion.

Which one have you got - touring low (50 cm), touring standard (52 cm) or touring high (54cm)? How did the seat change affect the seat hight from ground? Touratech specify only the heights measured from the (original) footrest (removable foot rest rubbers not included)
vertically to the lowest point of the seat. I need comparison to standard seat... Thanks

Cheers for the info. I await further news impatiently:bounce1

The seats for Wunderlich and Touratech are made by a company called Kahedo. They never used to sell direct to the public, but that could be changing as they are constructing an online shop on their website.

You could also keep an eye out there.

F800GS SEATS

Hello to all,

The F800GS and the F650GS have both got the same seats on the bikes, you get a factory low or normal height seat when you order the bike new from Bmw,you have a choice between the two,the touratch gel seats come in a low, normal and high seat heights and they are about £340.00,however I have another option for people a Rallye seat directly from Bmw which makes the seat height 920mm,its much more comfortable almost feels like a gel seat, also has a grey stripe down the centre of the seat, looks great on the magnesuim matt F800GS,best of all they are £186.00 inc vat,ad you can get them from Vines of Guildford Bmw.

suspension

Had the bike for a week two weeks now , was on hols last week so this week was my first chance to ride it , had a box of goodies to fit on my return before my first ride to work and very pleased with it so far .

Only issue i have is that i still feel the suspension is soft for my use , so looking at options and so far have come up with a blank , any one out there with any ideas? Lokking for a new shox on uprated fork springs .

I install Ohlins shock and frankly I didn't have time to experiment, but I can tell that is also soft, when I used the original settings. The figures I'd give them was 130-140 kg I'm 95 kg.

Any other comments?

I just returned from my first weekend on the 800 and I completely agree with the first posters comment: in any serious off-road situations, the suspension front and back is too soft - both ends bottom without too much effort and the front end squirrels around in damp sandy conditions.

Not that I'm disappointed, I expected this would be the case and I knew I would have to do some work. I'd be really interested in hearing from anyone who has had any experience with firmer springs like the hyperpros or the wirth springs in more 'demanding' off-road conditions.

Thanks,

mal

Pleased i'm not the only one ,when i mentioned that i felt it was way to soft on my initial test ride. Everyone seemed surprised .

Keith

+1 on the soft suspension. I did wonder if things could be improved somewhat with some heavier oil, might be worth a try but I don't think it will be enough. I had a look at an x moto the other day and the front end looks exactly the same to me except its got adjusters on. I'm thinking about sourcing some forks or maybe my 800 forks could be rebuilt with adjusters and internals from the x moto. There are progressive springs available now I believe. Just need to source a parts break down for the x moto and 800 gs to compare and see what's needed.

Touratech seat

Been to the NEC show, and went on the TT stand and sat on the F800GS seat :thumb2
Very nice and comfy it was too BUT, at just shy of 300 notes it was rather expensive. Saying that I am an adopted Yorkshireman whose careful with his hard earned cash
I reckon you could get your original one covered just like that one for a third of that cost locally if you take the website pic and say want that one !
