Wolfman Expedition Panniers

With regards to the Wolfman Expedition Dry Panniers and Wolfman Teton Panniers here's the latest information and updates I have.

Although I generally only post as an individual on here, I also own Winding Roads and I've had a lot of emails about these bags, with quite a few generated from this thread, so thought I'd post and tell you the latest of what I know -

I have had an initial small quantity of the bags arrive yesterday, and this is the first time I've seen the finished product since I saw the prototypes in Milan last November. Eric has modified them a couple of times since then as he has refined the concept. The only photo's I have of them on any bike at the moment are the one's on my sites, showing the bags on Eric's own DRZ -

The Expedition Bags are made in a 22oz heavy duty tarpaulin / pvc material (34oz base), and the Teton Bags made in a regular ballistic Cordura type material. The size, shape and fittings are the same for both types. The Expedition bags though are RF welded with no stitching to seep water and a roll top closure on both types mean no zips to seep water either. Wolfman have a repuation for making tough bags, and these look to be more of the same. You'll notice a number of extra D rings and loops on the strap fixes and these are designed for strapping water / fuel bottles or whatever to the bags.

Wolfman are intending to develop a range of side frames to carry the bags, at present only the DRZ has been done. Next will be the Suzuki DR 650 and Kawsaki KLR 650, which are popular in the US, but not so here. Then they will move onto the BMW GS range and KTM 950 /990 Adv and the 690 Enduro. My guess is that will all take quite some time as Wolfman are quite a small company and Eric does all the R&D himself as well as running the company day to day.

Whether the frames will be too expensive in the UK will depend on the exchange rate and the shipping costs, as they are quite substantial and pretty heavy. So we'll see.

The bags have been designed with three alternative fixings - the usual throw over type, fixing to Wolfman's own side racks (as they become available) and fixing to other proprietary pannier frames (i.e. Givi, H & B, SW-Motech, etc). As they only arrived yesterday afternoon, we've not yet had chance to do any trial fits, get any better photo's or much else really.

Looking over the bags the fixing arrangement for other types of pannier frames looks simple and easy, allowing quick removal and fitting of the bags as well as a stable mount, but we'll be able to tell better once we can get them onto a bike.

Once I know a bit more, I'll post it up along with any pictures, and reply again to anyone that has already emailed me. If anyone has any specific questions please post up and I'll do my best to answer, or you can email me at - wolfman @ windingroads.co.uk

Cheers,

Joe

Has anyone tried these?

I'm looking for soft panniers for F800 GS - any recommendations would be really welcome:thumb

Update - We've now sold a few of these to 650/800GS customers now and so far the feedback has been good. One customer, Joe Heenan, has kindly sent me some photo's of the Wolfman Expedition Dry Panniers fitted to his SW-Motech Quick Lock Evo pannier frames. Based off Joe's feedback, Wolfman are going to make a couple of small alterations to the strap fittings to suit SW-Motech frames a little better (the tube diameter makes the strap fixings a little too tight to fasten, so we could do with another 1/2" on the strap) and we should have those in the next week or two. Otherwise, everything is pretty positive.

Wolfman's own brand fixing frame for the 650/800GS is still a little way off, but they're making progress I'm told :augie Still not sure on the price of those until we can get a finished weight.

Hi there Thomo, have you had a look at the Great Loop soft luggage. Not cheap but supposed to be close on the best soft luggage available at the moment

Thanks Zippy

They do look good, but the bank manager is pointing me towards the Wolfman Expedition!

Good luck on your ride to Cape Town, I lived in sunny SA for 10 years  and that ride is on my list of to do's.

Thanks Joe

The set-up in the photo's with the SW-Motech frames look's good.

Can you PM me when you have the panniers with the longer strap available?;)

No problem, I'm speaking to Wolfman tomorrow evening, so should have an update then.

I guess those are the quick fit fixing rather than the throw-over fixing?

I have the SW Motech frames already, and looking at the pix you can see the disadvantage of metal boxes and how far back they are mounted. THis disadvantage is also present in this pannier/frame combo.

It would be nice if the Wolfman frames allowed mounting further forwards :D

Those are the quick frame fixing Dry Panniers. Obviously I won't know the position of the Wolfman frames until I see them, but my guess is that they won't be much further forward due to the restrictions of the pillion pegs and fuel filler access. BMW's own frames are in a pretty similar location, the problem of a small bike and short seat I guess.

Hopefully you might be seeing the pictures of the new BMW Tank bag below:augie

So this bag and the bag on the bike at the previous post are not the same?

When i look in the BMW acessories catalogue for Sweden I can only find one tank bag, and that has the part number 77 45 7 726 998. It is the high or the low one? Do you have to lift of the saddle every time you take the tank bag off the bike?

I can´t decide if I should go for BMW, Wunderlich or Touratech when it comes to the tank bags. Wunderlich has nice attachments with no side straps, but is small, only 10-20 litres. Touratech is approx the same price, has side straps but 14-20 litres space. Hmm...

Got the bag today, Seems like a good choise. Good quality and a lot of smart pouches and details.

I also bought the rein shield, but it seems too big and rigid to bring every time in chance, sorry RISK of rain. But it sure will do the job. Easier to bring a plastig bag for sensitive items in the bag.

Thanks Joe

Wolfman have now modified the fixings to suit the oval tubing on the SW-Motech frames and Joe Heenan has kindly sent me some more photo's, showing them fitted to his 800.

We've sold out of the first batch of Expedition Dry Panniers, but should have new stock next week. Will hopefully have first sight of the first Wolfman rigid frames for the 800GS then too.

Tankbags and pictures

I'm looking at all these pictures of these wonderfully expensive bags and there is a distinct lack of pictures of the insides of them all :eek

How about some description of the inner compartments and their carrying capability ?

Can you get an A4 sized folder in any of them ?

Tankbag gamble

With no reply about what you can get in these things, I went and had a look a what was on offer from other makers.

I've ended up getting a very cheap, but great quality bag and tank harness.

The bag is the T 481 at £30 comes with loads of straps, internal magnets for use on metal tank bikes, rain cover and a very nice "man-bag strap" :ymca

The harness is a T460B at £16.49, more and more fixing straps and the B denotes the quick release buckles as oposed to the plain 460

The rear seat straps hide themselves very well and have loops on them and mine have been afixed to the little post that the triangle panel is screwed to :thumb

Cheap and chearfull Givi, less than £47 delivered to your door.
