Need to top up my 1150 gs, what oil should i use make/grade?
Dont want to use rubbish either,
thanks

Depends what the dealer put in it at the last service (assuming it was dealer serviced) but typicaly Castrol 10/40 semi-synthetic is a safe bet.

anything that fits these parameters is fine according to bmw. spend more if it makes you feel better :)

There's a few big threads on here about this. Make yourself a coffe and type in "oil" in the search engine.

I only say that as I'm pretty sure the consensus was 20w-50w, but can't be 100% sure.

And I'm going out now, so can't spend time finding it for you :D

I've been running Tesco's best 20/50 multigrade at all of £3.46 for 4 litres.

Nothing's gone wrong yet.

Do they state an API standard that the oil meets?

I had a look at the similarly priced ASDA product last week. On this there is no indication that the oil meets any quality standard. Now, bearing in mind that the minimum standard for a boxer engine dates from the 1980s you'd think they would claim something.

Perhaps it's just the stuff left over after frying doughnuts....

does anyone have a prefered make /grade of oil for the 1150gs?
is semi better than full synthetic?
cheers

Mate...do a Forum Search.

It`s all been done ad naseum before...ad infinitum.

If you then still can`t make an informed judgement yourself, put in what`s recommended in the manual.

Chunks, I use any synthetic 10W40 that the garage happens to have on its shelf when I've used my last one. Currently topping up with Total Quartz 7000. Buy a litre at a time fekin expensive but if dealer serviced they will top up with synthetic after the 6000 mile service. Mike at Motorad mentioned to me that synthetic will mix with mineral so its up to you what you tip in. You might have noticed that the motor soon gets very hot in slow traffic and the thing gets quite noisy so a good quality oil must be helpful at high temps. Keep an eye on the engine temp as if at maximum you should pull over for a cooling break. When are we going to have that pint you keep shooting through on?

Tried a number of oils but the bike is much smoother and quieter on Silkolene 10w50 fully synthetic (Pro 4 Plus).
On the last change I used MOTUL 10W50 Semi Synthetic and it sounded and ran like a tractor so within 150 miles I did another filter and oil change.
Personally I would rather spend £40 a year on oil and filters than spent hundreds on putting right the problems that cheap oils cause.

You don't do many miles a year, so i'll take no notice of what you say :D :D
