'01 R1150GS (with farkles) vs 1150GSA

There is a 2001 R1150GS with 50,000 miles for sale locally to me that is equipped with Ohlins (front and rear), full Remus exhaust, PIAA lights, Jesse aluminum panniers and some other accessories.

Would this be a decent bike or should I hold out to try and find an Adventure model?
 
if the price/condition and it suits your needs, go for it......
 
The standard GS handles better than the ADV but the ADV eats up the dirt better. Up to you.
 
I recently switched from an 04 Adv to an 01 GS with ohlins - and pleased I did. No experience of a standard GS with OE suspension, but with the Ohlins it certainly handles and rides better. It's also that little bit lighter and lower making it easier to ride in town (if that is something which figures in your riding).

I have to fill up a bit more often - not a big deal to me.
 
Buy the GS and ride it while keeping an eye out for a GSA tank; there are some quality parts on that.
 
I have a GS and have been really pleased with it. I am not seeking anything taller / heavier than this. You might be much bigger and stronger than me though. How much motorcycle do you want?

I have over the last year been replacing older parts and going into more depth like seals and that on my 99-00 GS..... took it to France this year the only issue I had was a little over heating during the heat wave, but probably should have put different oil in.....

I rode with a Pan ST1100 and a S10.... to be honest we all used roughly the same amount of fuel and filled up at the same time, so the range 220miles was spot on for me.

Bigger tank is an opinion I am looking at but to be honest unless I'm going on monster journeys the only benefit would be less stops but I'll have to stop when my buddies stop, and a full tank means more weight......

Great bikes though....... better having upgraded my springs to hyper pro ....

I much prefer the original GSA seat than ny GS one. Stock or aftermarket. Also, I don't know if the GSA alu panniers can be fitted to a regular GS. The GS plastic cases suck.

It's all interchangeable with the right parts.

If we take, 'suck'= rubbish I couldn't disagree more. At least for the use I put them to.

On the other hand, if post-apocalypse strength is really needed, go for the real thing: a pair of Vern's.

In this case, "suck" was meant to mean they are not practical. When going for a few days, I much prefer have a top loaded box where the content can be accessed without falling on the ground.

Each to his own. I don't do the rugged stuff. Just clip on the bigger lids, expand the inner bags and it's all fine between here and the next hotel. For three weeks. I sense that that might not sum up your routine...
The Vern's I mentioned have the lids you like but are also legendary for being outdoor proof. There was a write up that Sergeant Bilco did a while ago on his 1100. Well worth a read.
 
I have HeavyDuties' alu panniers on my Honda Africa Twin, and the original "Ikea" tins on the 2006 1150GSA. Love them for long travels. I also have some BMW plastic side cases on my K1200RS. They don't hold much and aren't very practical. The only two good things I like about them is that they are super easy to fit and remove. And they look slick. ;-)

When I ride away, I camp (most of the times) and cook. Therefore I need to carry more equipment than if I were doing hotel rooms and restaurants. Hence the extra practicality of top lids vs side openings. ;-)
