This is my fuel filter, also dated 2002, original filter, bike owned by me from new.
Sixteen years and only 36,000 miles. :blast

I was curious to see what the element looked like so I cut it in half.

mine is at 50,00 no symptoms but had a feeling it had never been changed, and that was my job for sat cutting it in half to have a look, i was lucky my neighbour ray is an ex honda mechanic and he has the double ear pipe clips and pliers to put factory connections back on, that cam chain adjuster has made the engine so much quieter well worth doing.

Using 20W50 oil also helps incase you are still using the 10W40.

If the in-tank hoses haven't been replaced, I strongly recommend that you do. They usually fail catastrophically.

Mine were just like new, still pliable and no cracks it surprised me as i thought they would have degraded after 16 years, even the pre filter bag was in one bit and no holes.

I often wondered if someone before me stored the bike with some stabilizer or gasoline antifreeze. The hose coming from the pump was hard and shrunken.
