Reliving bike trips whilst sat at my desk....
My dad recently bought a R1150RT.

He popped over today and told me that on the way through london along the Marylebone Road (Too narrow to filter and lots of stop start, especially in traffic) the RT just died. He was in gear and moving along, but tried to accelerate and found that the motor was no longer running. He managed to coast to a bus stop layby and it restarted. Apparently it had about 5 bars, maybe 6 on the temp gauge. Any suggestions as to a cause? I'm a little concerned that might happen on the motorway or worse still, mid-corner...

Go for the simple things first - my 1100RTdid the same once and it turned out to be the negative battery connection was loose...you never know!

Need more information -

When the motor died - was the tacho still indicating engine speed? (If yes then hall effect sensors ok, otherwise suspect hall effect sensors)

Was the bike low in fuel? When ws the fuel filter last changed? (suspect fuel filter restriction causing overheating of fuel)

Those would be my first checks.

Oh When the motor died did the warning lights come on? (If yes indicates supply of electrickery is ok)

Frank,

In answer to your questions:

Dunno,
Dunno,
Dunno
& Dunno

But I can certain try and find out, but I'm sure my Dad had at least a third of a tank left. Truth is its still under warranty as a 2nd hand buy, so if its not the loose negative terminal as suggested above, I'll recommend he takes it in to be on the safe side. Having said that the bikes only done about 12,000, I hope them bits aren't failing already.

Does the Hall sensor go by another name in the manual?
Cheers

mine did the same , does it start and tick over, but not rev up, if so it is the hall sensor [ which never go wrong guv] mine conked out three times before going altogether

Thanks GS Adventurer. My R1100GS just started to occassionaly cut out when going to idle. Hmmm, I recently added more lights and had the battery connections undone. After your post I looked for and found a loose battery connection.
