It seems to fit quite well, although there's some (very) slightly untidy beading on the inside edge where the screen meets the clock surround. I figured it'd be one on my to do list, after the deep clean, oil change, engine bars, fix scotoiler, contemplate spokes.......

Sorry I can't be of more help, what should it look like?

I'll have a look to see if I can find a manufacturers logo or anything. Mine (obviously) is a little higher - I cruised at between 80 and 90 on the motorway with no significant buffeting or noise. Looking at the way my screen fits around the headlight, it's hard to imagine that it's a home made one! -

Great way to buy a new bike and make it your own. I've done similar many times and picked up brilliant bargains because others want to buy on their doorsteps.

Worth paying particular attention to the twin fuel tanks in case it has been let down and they have cracked,they are expensive to replace. Also they are better started without throttle.I can't remember what the potential problem is but it usually results in a 'clacking sound'. Someone more knowledgable might be able to help or look it up.

....please can anyone elaborate on the 'CLACKING SOUND'?

..Nice bike by the way Nev...my recent return to THE 990 fold has been a top decision, great fun to ride.

I've had a butchers at the screen - not a mark on it (by which I mean there's no clue as to who made it. It works very well, although I think the original looks a lot more 'purposeful' (if you get me?)

Anyway, cleaned up the bike today and found no nasty surprises - there is an issue with the paint that I knew about, but if I'm honest for what I paid for the bike, I'll live with it, although I might consider a spray over the winter. There's no panel damage and everything fits well. There is a sort of coating on the for stanchions that is a little flaky, Tunneruk seems to have some covers here, so maybe something to look at later. As expected, it seems to have used a little bit of oil on the trip down (looking at the stick I'd guess 150ml or so over 478 miles, though it's hard to be precise- I figure this is acceptable usage, my 1150GS used a little too)

Looking good so far!

I bought my fork protectors from 'Crispy' on the KTM forum. They're about 2mm thick and made out of an almost plastic material and very strong. They needed to be heated slightly before they could be fitted.

They do use a little oil. Mine uses about a litre every 2000 miles. I befriended a KTM technician on Holiday in Turkey in September, he said 'they all do that' ... it's something to do with the position of certain oil jets which squirt oil up beneath the pistons .. I won't pretend to completely understand why it makes it use more oil but he seemed quite casual about it!
 
Well, the honeymoon is over! I decided that the 21in front wheel was taking some getting used to. Checked the pressures and found that the front only had 26psi in it. I got some air into it and went for a test. Better but still not happy with the front end. Did further checks and discovered that I have slightly knackered front wheel bearings. I've got the wheel out, got the seals off, taken the circlip out and then hit a brick wall as I can't seem to get enough purchase on the old bearings to knock them out. The spacer tube seems to rotate with the bearings and I can't see enough of a 'lip' to whack them out.

Any tips gratefully received.

Use a long piece of bar (an old 1/2" extension will do) use it to lever the spacer down so you can get the edge of it against the bearing to carefully and evenly tap it out. Heating the hub with a hot air gun helps if you have one.

As it happens.......I can be around next weekend.....I'm not overly familiar with the byways around Chilham (although there are many to play on looking @ the KCC interactive map); as long as there's a fuel station on the play route as I've only got a little tank (9.5L) :rolleyes:

Still, it could be good fun with 3 different sizes of orange beastie on the lanes.....:D
