I can't get to the bottom of whether my bike an April 06 1200Gs had an EWS recall(or whatever euphemism BMW used!)

I have spoken to 2 dealers and the answer has been non committal at best...
I have been told it didn't need the EWS changed and then I have been told it does need the EWS changed?

Can anyone help me to establish whether this needs to be dome on my bike.
Btw, I have checked and I do not have the latest version , serial # ending in 274..
TIA...

I have a June 06 GSA.

I asked about mine and was assured it did NOT need doing. I accepted that as a simple fact.

As I have owned the bike from new I would have received an official notification from BuMW had it been needed, just as I did over the re-routing of the front wheel's ABS sensor cable on my vanilla 05 1200GS and some sticky labels for my handguards.

I do though carry one, along with a spare fuel pump controller. The odd thing is that the two spares were bought in 2007, so may well be duff or duffish. It's a tricky old world.

If really in doubt, ask a third dealer or, better still, contact BuMW Customer Services in Bracknell.

My old 1200 was 06 june and was not included in the recall. I was working part time at a BMW dealers at the time and checked the recall sheet myself so I think you're fine:thumb2

Puk,
I have been riding, put 400 miles on it in a week or so... I am abit nervous as i have a trip to Assen coming up in a couple of weeks and wanted the ews and fpc thing sorted.. Feeling relaxed now.....

Carry spares of the FPC and EWS Antenna, plus a small 'Security Torx' tool bit set to undo and replace the FPC or EWS antenna should the need arise (stock bike toolkit no good for this).

You'll also need to carry some tape and the slim plastic wallet key in case of the need to temporarily wire in the new EWS antenna as a get-you-home fix. It's all easy and takes 15 mins at the roadside, no dramas.

Do a search and all should be revealed.

Cheers Adam.. I have been reading all of the posts.....:(

I think he meant the threads / posts on how to fix the problem at the roadside..... Not the threads / posts that predict inevitable doom....

If you haven't seen it you may also care to look for the thread(s) about how to get around the sidestand cut-out switch.... and the one(s) about adjusting the front brake switch......too.... That'll keep you busy (and worried) for a while.... Plus if you have an 06 bike, that is getting close to 26,000 miles, be prepared for the imminent failure of your final drive oil seal and / or the drive itself.... ENJOY ASSEN.... (PS They do sell bulbs there) :beerjug:

BMW Motorbike customer service or technical support should be able to give you a definitive answer - 01344 426 565.

:) it's worth noting that if you are unfortunate enough to have EWS faliure and use a spare to get going again as desribed elswhere on this site...
once you have powered up the bike, faffed about with the new ring/wallet key etc
you can uplug it (as others have said the bike won't stop) and pack it away again....
I discovered when experimenting that if you need to stop the bike for any reason, if you use the kill switch and leave the ign switched ON...you don't need to faff about with the Ant ring, it's only when you power down the ign do you need to plug it in again...

Kaycee,
Yep, Nirvana is a site we have where we sell our bikes.....

Wapping,
Cheers, now I am bloody paranoid again... Can I get the final drive oil seal checked somehow. I seem to remember reading that the BMW dealer warranty does not cover the final drive???

Can I get the final drive oil seal checked somehow.

Yup. A BuMW dealer will do it. It will probably involve nothing more than them looking it. Then saying, "It's not leaking" and giving you a bill for £30 plus VAT.

Seriously, oil should not pour out of it. You will probably notice a dark smear around the large hole in the final drive, a bit like a very fine oil mist. That'll be all. I have been through two and am still living to tell the tale. I see one in the City most days.

If the drive itself is disintegrating you will hear / feel it or the ABS warning light will flash as the bits (probably just flecks of swarf) muck up the speed sensor that sits behind the rear wheel. The brakes will still work - or at least mine did :D - no matter what the flashing red triangle of death tells you.

PS Don't rely on what you think you heard about what is (or is not) covered by BuMW's warranty. Read the document.

PPS I think your signature has the wrong web address.
