Got my bike in for a general check tomorrow to have its throttles bodies balanced and valves checked after doing close to 20k miles. Not knowing if they've been checked before I owned it (only had it for just over a year), and based on the assumption that they've never been checked previously, can I expect to feel much difference, or is this like asking how long is a peice of string?

The main reason for having the above checked is just a "feeling" that the bike doesn't feel as smooth as it should and every now and again it feels like its hunting when hold the thottle at about 3k rpm

Anyhoo, any comments from other riders who have had their 'bits' checked would be welcomed.

I imagine you will feel the benefit of the work being done, poor throttle sync can result in the problems you describe :beerjug:

Always ensure your bike gets regular checks on the valve clearances. There is a history of broken exhaust valves on the 1200 engines and nobody ever got a straight answer from BMW as to why it happened but my suspicion is a combination of lean fuelling and insufficient valve clearances. Regular checks as a precaution!

As for balancing of throttle bodies once the valves are set correctly, this is essential for even fuelling and smooth running.

All done, and what a difference its made! No more hunting, and the engine just feels much nicer at all revs.

Well worth it, even it is was slightly expensive (I think).

I was going to suggest that you would definatly feel a difference in the wallet department

It does depend where you take it .... I had the end-float/valve-clearances/TBs-balanced by a well known independent who's local to me .... for the princely sum of £35. I think I drank more than that in coffee whilst there :D I guess choices are limited though on the IOM.
It made a massive difference.

I didn't know that Cheshire had any independents, let alone well-known ones.

Ah, but Cheshire extends a long way north making ABW a 15 minute ride away :thumb2
