HI,

had my gs for getting on 6 months now with no issues, untill now, couple of weeks ago i stopped to fill up and when i turned ignition on and pressed starter nothing happened at all, no clicking or noise of any kind, turned key back off and then on again and it started straight away.
never happened again untill sunday when it happened twice, same thing ignition on all the lights and displays came on with no waring messages or lamps lit up, pressed the starter and nowt .i never touched the kill switch so im guessing that rules it out as the problem?

turning the key off and back on and away it went, it has a bmw alarm fitted but its never been used as long as i have had the bike.

Spoke to the dealer today and explained the problem, the guy didnt seem too suprised and said to bring it back down and they would get it sorted, said it may just be a case of plugging in the diaganostic tool and clearing a fault or it may need more investigation ! just waiting for them to get back in touch to arrange a time etc..

anyone had the same thing happen:nenau

I have a feeling that I have seen this before. If the sidestand were down you'd get the exact same syptoms. I think that switch can get knocked. Have a look down there and see if there is any damage. If so I think you can purchase a protector so it won't happen again. A loose connection could give you just what you've got.

Good luck (that's about the only fault I haven't yet had...thought I'd had the lot!)

seem to remember this happening on my 2005, think I switched off and tried again, no problem second time.
Never actually thought about it again - probably sub-consciously blamed it on canbus hiccup and forgot it.

Hope you discover nothing sinister.

its happened 3 times now, each time ive turned key off then back on and its started straight away,

dropped back at dealers this morning they are looking at it, hope get it back saturday and find out what was wrong:thumb2

2 things to check:

Relay under tooltray. Can corrode.

Wiring loom around battery area. Can chafe leading to corrosion.

I' ve had the same problem on my 07 after fitting a new battery , took it to the dealer, they put it on a diagnostic machine , something to do with no power ie no battery in the bike . The guy reset everything and it's been ok since. Hope this helps.

dealer rang me yesterday and mentioned the antenna ring and asked if there had been any codes etc on the dash (ews??), nothing like that so they are still looking at it, the lad said there was still a couple of things to check but nothing showed up on the diagnostic and all since they have had the bike its started every time. supposed to be getting it back saturday so just gotta wait and see what they say.

There is a massive wealth of knowledge from "The Collective". Does anyone think that the dealers use this site to get tips how to fix GS's?

If not, why not?:D

No, because sometimes there is more enthusiasm than knowledge on bike forums. And they don't have time to wade through all our crap.

Are you getting a Neutral light and a gear indicator saying 'N'? Have you tried starting it with the clutch pulled in and the sidestand up? Just trying to eliminate the gear position pot.

all the lights come on the dash as normal , including the "N", never tried pulling the clutch in, just turned key off then back on and away its went, never heard from dealer todat so will give them a bell tommorow dinner time and see what they say

dealer has just phoned me to say.......................they cant find anything wrong with the bike:nenau

they have done all the checks they can, and started the bike from cold, hot etc and its never missed a beat so im picking it up saturday . The problem will have to escalate before they can look at it or find out whats wrong with it.

they did however strip and clean the front brake to cure the squeel at low speeds,.

the worrying thing is if it wont start again at some point and im left stranded...........

I suspect the microswitch in the ignition barrel.

My 1200GSA did exactly the same thing with about 35,000 on the clock from memory. Everything normal on the dashboard, simply no hint of ignition at all. In short, dead as a Dodo.

The switch wears, leaving an uneven contact area. Sometimes it will work, sometimes it won't. A touch concerning when you are in Austria, or indeed anywhere else. I believe that when it works it re-sets the fault code record, so the fault will not show in the diagnostic's history. Like many intermittent faults it's a pain, as Sod's Law it will be fine when you drop the bike off and maybe for days either side.

In the end I took some short video clips to show BMW's mechanics. A new microswitch later and all was well.
