'07 Final Drive Fluid change @ 600m Service - Fact or Fiction?

Hey guys - great to hear from you. Oh, man - you told me it never snowed in Victoria! :D I guess I'll have to cancel the application :D ;)

Cheers - yeah, it was a close thing but the deal they eventually offered me on the '07 just clinched it. Could've easily went a couple of different ways though. Basically, the bike is 100% better than the last one (at least so far! :mmmm ) The brakes are miles better, loads more feedback and not as on/off. Back one feels a lot stronger than the '04 as well. I'll email you the full sorry tale.

Inuvik in August? Where do I sign :bounce1

... What really concerns me are the pre '07 FD units.

... If they were doing there job as 'designed' ie. a sealed for life unit, then there would be no need to reposition the drain plug and perform the 600mile oil change.

... Where will that leave pre '07 owners if/when their FD fails outside the warranty period?

... It seems to me that BWM are obviuosly aware of a problem, but are quite prepared to do the dishonourable thing to their existing customers. :spitfire

... I love my '05 manufactured '06 registered GS, but I am losing confidence in the manufacturer big-time.

Are you losing confidence because something has happened to your bike or are you being worried about what you read here ?

I changed my 04 manufactured 05 registered FD oil at 11000mls and the oil was very clean and not smelly at all :thumb An easy preventative worthwhile job costing about £18. I could not however find any moly grease for the shaft anywhere though and it was still well greased so I just reassembled it.

Not everyone will know about this or have the capability to do it. The thing is, it's supposed to be sealed for life and now it's being changed at 600 miles. I'll do it myself though as I like tinkering with my bikes, but it shouldnt really be needed. Hopefully no wear has taken place but this doesnt give me much confidence in the manufacturing or quality process being used by BM or their suppliers.

Quite interesting tread this! It proves that many service people never read the service bulletines from BMW. Bad, very bad.

Also, in regards to:

bulletin refers to washing of drive box parts in manufacture not being 100% effective & this oil change is to remove any remaining particles before they contaminate the oil leading to "accelerated wear" of the box.

Note that this applies to all R12 and K12 models made from 2004 and on no matter if BMW admit it or not. The oil must be changed at least once. I recently changed final drive oil in my R12GS -04 after 40000 km. The oil that came out looked like tar and was only half the specified volume. :(

For what its worth....

My dealer changed the engine and diff oil on the first service, but did not do the gearbox.....1150gsa. :o
I have since changed both at the 10k service, and will do them again as I now have 21k km on the clock.
PS grease yer speedo cable too.

cheers

Hi All,

I picked up my new R1200GS on Saturday after three very happy years with my 03 R1150GS. I have read this post with some interest seeing though I will have my 1,000km service in the next couple of days. I have looked at the final drive with some detail and can’t find an oil drain plug like the one on my old 1150. Can any of you give me directions to its location?

As a point of interest when I picked the bike up, I asked the sails guy and he had no knowledge of the oil change requirement or the location of the drain plug. Does not exude confidence that it will be done at the first service

12GSA, build date 29 Aug 2006. Delivered early November. Bike is in for first service now, picking her up tomorrow. Dealer here in Sydney is changing final drive fluid as part of service. Bullitin gone out to all dealers apparently. Don't know cost yet, will post details later.

Brucew you have missed the issue... there is no drain plug cos it is sealed for life. Dealers will change is at huge disproportionate cost. Leave it for life... or you can do it yourself for peace of mind:
There is a super pictorial step by step thread here if you do a search..sorry but I can't get the link working properly otherwise I'd give you a direct link
:D

I got the the rear diff fluid changed at my 07 12adv (delivered late sept),
but first after i told the dealers service shop to do it...
When I told them, they digged in the papers and found the service bulletine.
"humming" and blamed at something I don´t remember, they finaly did it for free, as they should....

Fact!

...well I say fact. I'm pretty sure my 07 bike/07 plated 12GSA had it's final drive oil changed during it's 600 mile service a couple of weeks ago. I'll check the service invoice to be sure.

BTW. The GSA is fantastic and to anyone worried about height or weight, you really do get used to it.

Extra drain plug is a myth - Also I have used both Wollaston and Balderston and each time that I have asked them about this they have told me that the final drive oil is for life.

There is still confusion on this issue - has anyone actually got a copy of a document from BMW that that they can post on this site and so settle this once and for all?

My new March 1st gs12 had its back box oil changed at first service in Shipley.
Ref the drain plug - I've just been for a look and mine hasn't got one! It does have a plug on the back of the housing, in line with the centre line of the swingarm/rear axle, so that it looks more like a oil level plug. But as that is the only plug I can see, it must be filled and emptied through there! (oil must be sucked out?)
I know my bike was built mid February, so it's definitely a 'late' model, if that means anything.

'07 Final Drive Fluid Change

Hello everybody. Been riding in Mexico the past seven months and away from this board. Bought a new 07 GSA in southern Mexico and at the 1000 km. service the dealership did not change the final drive fluid. Only when I queried this and mentioned that this is now part of the 1000 km. service did they do it. They were very apologetic and will notify everyone with an 07 and get those bikes in and the final drive fluid changed. Also checked with a BM Motorrad Tech friend in Canada who said that it is common practice there to change this fluid at 1000 km. He also thought it would be a good idea to change at every 20,000 km after that. So make sure your dealer does this change everyone. Cheers! :thumb

Just had my 07 plate GS 600 mile service done in Aberdeen, the final drive oil was changed and it was itemised on the bill . . . . . but cant believe they charged 51 squid for the 4l of engine oil ! ! ! !

Has anyone actually seen or preferably got photographic evidence of the alleged new drain plug on the 07 drives yet?

my final drive seal blew recently- in the middle of nowhere- I was advised on the phone that the unit was sealed for life too, hence the replacement, not repair... sealed for life is my bid
