'07 Final Drive Fluid change @ 600m Service - Fact or Fiction?

Rear Drive

I bought a new 07 GS from Lone Star BMW here in Austin, Texas and was told that the 07's final drives were cleaned with a new solvent after assembly and that it's because of that solvent that the lube should be changed at the initial service.

My initial service was done without charge (built into the purchace price) so I don't know what the cost was.

i've just been to CW's and i've seen the bmw technical bulletin relating to this issue :)

the main points (that i can remember) are:

applies to 07 bikes

oil changed once at first service, it costs extra. price of first service has gone up.

bulletin refers to washing of drive box parts in manufacture not being 100% effective & this oil change is to remove any remaining particles before they contaminate the oil leading to "accelerated wear" of the box.

performing this change later (10,000Km service is mentioned) is "of no benefit". must be done at first service.

this is a once only oil change. when done, the box is effectively "sealed for life" like the earlier ones.

new drive box with drain at the bottom is to be fitted in production in the future. this new box also is fitted with a magnet to catch some of the swarf.

new box is not going to be retro fitted to older machines. i dare say bmw have balanced the cost of this against a number of warranty/goodwill replacements at some later date. perhaps.

:

My R1200GS (Built end Mar 2007) just had its 600 mile service on Friday and there was no mention of Final Drive Fluid change on the invoice. It did not appear on the 600mile/1000Km Maintenance schedule checklist either

Before I contact my dealer to find out whether they did change the final drive oil and if not, to get it done, could somebody please either post up or pm me details of the relevant bmw technical bulletin or a copy of their maintence schedule which includes the Final Drive Oil Change. I aim to keep my GS for a very long time so it is very important to me that I take all steps to prolong its life. Many thanks in anticipation.

But that's an 06/2006 check sheet, produced well before the current round if 'Final drive oil change at first service' was introduced.

IMHO, mechanics just tick all the relevant boxes, which may or may not bear any relation to the actual work done.

That's what I thought, even though it has 0307 R1200GS at the top.

Anyone got a copy of an 2007 R1200GS check sheet?

Thanks Iain

Been in touch with the Dealer had they have confirmed that the Diff Oil was changed ;)

Just serviced mine for the first time 12000 mile (warranty out) & decided to change the final drive oil, the old oil was fine :D gave me a chance to use some fancy oil i had in the garage & lube the spline

My April 06 GS went in for it's 6000 mile service this week and on collection my dealer (BVM Stroud) informed me that the final drive oil had been changed and that MBW recommend that all final drive oils be changed at around 6k miles. After that no further changes required. Recommendation for engine oil is now Castrol GP 20W50 instead of GP 15W40. As a result there is a lot less engine noise and the engine feels silky smooth.

0307 is not the month/year it is the variant

if you go here http://www.bmwarchiv.de/vin/bmw-vin-decoder.html you can enter the last 7 digits of your vin number and get details of your bike. The first detail you will see is "Typschlüssel" which means "type key" or variant in english.
You can also find this in your V5 log book under model

Has anyone actually seen or preferably got photographic evidence of the alleged new drain plug on the 07 drives yet?

just found this pic on ADV rider:

i'd have thought they would have put it at the bottom :blast maybe it's just the angle? :nenau

Given the thickness of the casing and that flange there, I'd say the lip of the hole will probably be flush with the lowest level inside the casing:nenau

It'll be interesting to see the FD oil after some fords runs on the first batch of new 1200's we get coming along :)

I saw this face2face today.
Seems my dealer has one GS like this on the floor, but they didn't even know (since *I* showed it to them).

As for the 1000Km FD oil change, it is fact. They got this instruction from BMW sometime in the last 40 days.

I Did

I did have my final drive fluid changed at the 600 mile service here in the US on my 2007 r1200gs & was told that it should be changed at least once a year.

Never heard this before/not in any manual and think your dealer is way off base.
