Not mine this time :blast but me mates but anyone heard of this, or got comments :augie

It's an 07GS, and been discharging the battery whilst tucked up in garage despite Optimate etc. Typical scenario is Optimate overnight, short run 20 miles or so, back home, battery flat by morning. No alarm or anything AFAIK.

Dealer says battery fine.

What he does say about this is that the problem is the Quest mount, which has been attached (using the correct lead not a botch) into the hidden front socket.
Dealer says that this is causing the electrics to not shut down and causing the drain.
Note there is no Quest in the mount overnight, just the cradle.

Mate previosuly had an 05, wired in same way no problems at all. Dealer says the different software is the reason it is now a problem.

Havent as yet had opportunity to see if ok without the lead and mount in place.

I smell BS. Any comments, similar experiences?

Sounds like BS to me as well.

But IIRC there has been issues with Zumo's, again IIRC, where because they have an internal battery they keep open the power to the socket as long as the Zumo is fitted, even if it wasn't switched on. Maybe that's what the dealer is thinking of?

Could he not disconnect the Quest lead for a while, and see if it stops the problem and run the Quest on its internal battery.

Yes, he needs to do that. I am currently sitting here waiting for a call telling me his battery is dead again...

Sounds like it might be that problem they are thinking about.

I will keep the forum posted on the outcome of this one.

I've got an 07 GS, Quest wired exactly like that and the unit powers down shortly after switch off, no problems with battery so far. Can he check current draw with garmin plugged into loom and removed ?

Don't mess about

The easiest way is to wire the socket direct to the battery (with a fuse) Very simple, old fashioned method - and if you wish you can connect your Optimate to it if/when you need a charge.

Mine does exactly the same - 55 1200 GS. At first I thought I had a dead battery but it turns out the sat nav cradle (Ram powered from BM gps socket) wasn't shutting down all the time when you turned the ignition off - seemed a bit random and seemed to also switch itslef on! A few times I'd put the unit (Garmin quest by the way) into the cradle and it would power up even though the ignition was off. The cradle draws a very small current when powered up even if the unit is not attached as there is a transformer in it (12v - 5V). I read elsewhere on this site that a 'software update' would fix it but the dealer was mistified when I mentioned this when it was last in for a service (out of warranty) - they foutered with the plug and tested the wiring and couldn't find out wrong. I tend to remove the fuse from the q pac wire if I'm going to leave it for a while but at some point I'm gonna wire it from the centec fuse panel I have switched off fromt he aux socket under the seat.

I think there's some kind of electrical anomaly in the North Somerset area, to add to the other various anomalies and phenomena we get down this way  :aidan

Sounds like a job for special agents Moulder & Scully!.`
dave gs.

Well, I never, sounds like Phil may have the answer. I think the culprit is putting a fuse panel in so he may rewire there too, looks like would be a good idea.

Oh, and Dave, most phenoma round 'yere are cider related.

It may not be the satnav. My GS was OK for a year or so but then started draining overnight, whether the satnav was fitted or not.

Eventually phoned dealer who asked if the mileage and clock was visible on the display when I turned the key from locked to unlocked (not as far as turning on the ignition). The answer was yes and the dealer made a software upgrade so not the display is only powered with the ignition on.. It seems that when the key is in the unlocked position the instruments are powered all the time (although the display goes off after a few seconds) and this drains the battery. As my bike is kept in a garage I don't bother to lock the steering as it makes it easier to move it around to get at things so the display was always powered.

Since the software change I have had no problems - and the dealer noted the fault reporting on the computer had registered as high number of large charge/discharge cycles on the battery so replaced it under warranty.

I'd read something similar elswhere on this site and mine also shows the clock when you turn the key from locked to off. I suppose the only thing I'd say is that my problems started when I fitted the sat nav and over the winter I left the bike for up to a fortnight a few times with the sat nav power fuse out and it started fine. I guess it may be a combination of the two which causes a problem.

In fact I shouldn't be sitting here writing this I should be heading north on my bike but the battery was dead this morning:blast thats after sitting for a week!

I'll check with the dealer on this too.

I have suffered three dead battery no starts in the last six months
1)Bike 2 days old and I had been playing with my new Zumo in its cradle, switching the ignition on and off
2)After washing the bike and switching the ignition on and off to stop the alarm
3) Same again after washing the bike last week

On each occasion, the battery was fully charged the previous day

I have now monitored battery voltage daily, 13.4 to 12.9 after a week of no use

I was blaming the battery,,, But in 2005 there was a well publicised software glitch such that the canbus did not shut down if the ignition was switched off followed by switching the ignition on again without starting the engine.

That software glitch is supposed to be sorted, but I AM 100% CONVINCED THAT IT IS STILL THERE. 07gsa with the latest software update :(
