The starter does have a separate relay, it is not part of the solenoid.
On the 2008 model update it was moved. I guess there had been too many cases of corroded wiring,m so it was relocated much hgher up, underneath the ZFE and BMS K units.
It is a real bastid to get to ...
Remove tank panles, disconnect fuel lines and fuel pump wiring, then remove tank. The ZFE and BMS K ECU units are mounted under tank, just behind and below the headstock. There are a couple of fiendish-to-release clips keft and right that release the top plastic plate that holds the ZFE. That can be lifted and folded forward. Undernath that is the BMS K unit, remove a few cable ties and that can be lifted to one side and left dangling. Underneath that are 2 relays in a housing that is clipped into the BMS K plastic mounting frame. From behind
. One is for the starter, the other? Perhaps it is for the auxiliary lights?
Once you have worked out how to get that out the relays are piss-easy to remove and replace, they are standard NO micro relays, used in BMW cars, Fords and Volvos. Mine are Tyco made, but Bosch and others make relays that are identical in size and layout. If you cant get a NO relay, then a cross-over will also do fine. There are no wires in the socket for the NC output, which can safely be ignored.
Reassembly is , as they say in the Haynes manuals, a reverse of the dismantling process. I should have taken photos but forgot ..
