Hi all,

Yesterday whilst heading home from the usual commute, Central London then onto the A1 to Herts. First stretch of the A1 last night opened the bike up, 6th gear and after a mile or so 70+mph the bike died in the central lane. Engine stopped, clocks & display went blank. Tried the hazards, but nought. Luckily not much traffic around for a change, so was looking for a spot to roll off to. Turned ignition off whilst rolling along with the key and back on and the display kicked in again and she started no probs. off i went. Headed off home via the back roads and tried all sorts (slow speed gear changes, rolling off throttle quickly, hard accelerating) to replicate it, but nothing.

Never happened before, no stalls changing down from 3rd to 2nd that i have read about on hear. Just wondering if anyone has any initial thoughts on this?

Going to head off shortly for a decent ride to see if it occurs again.

I did wonder if the ring antennae would be the thing to shut the bike down if it was on it's way out?

Thanks very much:thumb2

It sounds like a complete electrical failure. Loose battery connections....? :nenau

Faulty wiring around the headstock, or ignition switch or kill switch fault. Possibly.

I can lend you a spare ring antenna if you want ?

Hi
Thanks Bisbee, have a spare at home to swap out if needs be. Cheers for the other ideas gents, will have a good old wiggle of the headstock wiring loom whilst it's running later. Do the 12's have a similar issue around the headstock loom as the 1150's have?

Thanks again

Simple cause could be side stand kill switch, managed to do this myself; stretching leg while riding and inadvertantly caught the side stand. It doesn't have to move much for the kill swithch to kill the engine.Happened in the fast lane of the m6

This wouldn't affect the display though so:nenau

EMI - did you ride past a radio transmitter, radar etc?......

Can't trust all that electronics you know.

Headstock loom tie wraps caused me some intermittent ews faults I cut them and refixed the loom in different places which seems to be ok now

This has been covered in another thread (too lazy to search). In my case it was the coil pack. Left me stranded in the outside lane of the M6. . .

I changed the coil pack and no problems in 2 years.

whether the immobiliser is active when riding or not (I doubt it) I don't think it would kill the lot, just flash the relevant warning

I suspect as the action of switching off and then on with the ignition sorted it you may have a dodgy switch, as mentioned elsewhere, search on here for chapter and verse, given the safety issues might be worth changing regardless

Had exactly the same thing happen to me on my 2005 GS - simply died whilst in the outside lane of a 3 lane A road. Had to coast across two lanes of traffic to stop, after which it started again no problem. No explanation ever found and was one of several reasons I got rid of it.

Ok, cheers Gents.

Ran for a few mins, whilst pulling/ pushing on the headstock loom near to the ignition switch. Wiggled around with the ignition switch with key in etc. Also ran it on primary coils & then secondary coils. Whipped the plugs out and seemed ok aswel to my untrained eye.

Will head off for a decent ride later, see if it happens again then see if i can get across to ideally Motoscot or SBW if i really need to for a fault code scan.

As ever with these things it can either be a really simple, really complicated fix or just never happen again :blast

Thanks Trainman, found a thread ref the ignition switch. Will take it off and give it a good clean up. Worth a try as it's £65 for a new one.

Ta

I would say ignition switch or the wiring to it. Its the only part other than disconnecting the battery that would kill everything.
Of course it could be as simple as the ignition wasn't turned on fully so it made the connection but hitting a bump knocked it back very slightly so switched everything off.

It does sound like the ignition switch. I have been thinking about having one as a spare just recently funnily enough.
By the way stu I am in St. Albans, if you ever need use of a GS911 I have one.
