Some friends of mine were on a motorcycle run when one of the riders was seriously injured in an accident. While they managed to look after the rider until professional help arrived it highlighted the fact that an emergency could occur at any time or place and that they would like to be more prepared and to deal effectively with an incident involving injuries.

I contacted a number of First Aid training organisations and St Andrew's First Aid have agreed to provide an Emergency First Aid training day including a section at the end covering RTA accidents and helmet removal. Getting a suitable venue at a reasonable cost was not so easy. However I have now provisionally organised the course for Saturday 19th November 2011 at Bellshill Library and Cultural Centre (ML4 1RJ) from 9am to 4pm.

The total cost for the course, including venue costs will be £50. The venue has a cafe which will operate from 11am onwards but the course cost does not include refreshments or food. Eat in the cafe, bring a packed lunch, or a local chippie is only 100 yards from Library.

The course will include:Understanding the role of the First Aider including:

- the importance of preventing cross infection
- use of available equipment
Assessing the situation and circumstances in order to act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency, including at the scene of RTAs.

Administering First Aid to a casualty who is:
- unconscious (including seizure)

- choking
- wounded and bleeding

- suffering from shock

Administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)

Providing appropriate First Aid for minor injuries

Helmet Removal.

I already have a number of people confirmed but need at least another 7 to make the course viable. If you would like to come on this course please contact me asap so that I can confirm the bookings. I have until this coming Friday ( 4th November) to confirm. The course is open to anybody over 18 (condition of venue hire) and is designed to be of use to any member of the public. The RTA and Helmet part will just be a part of the day's training.

Many thanks

Iain

Looking for another one or two people and the course will be confirmed :thumb

Course going ahead on 19th November. Plenty places left. Maximum cost for the training will be £50. Just let me know by the 18th November if you want to come.

Times are now 9:00 to 14:30

Thanks Iain

Iain ,
If it's any use I may be able to organise some follow up FPOS ( first person on scene ) Training if enough people show an interest. This could be carried out for free at a local community fire station , although I'd need to get the ok from my Area commander first .:augie .
I have intermediate FPOS & Trauma Management qualifications and could provide some quallity realistic scenario based input, although it wouldn't be accredited I believe it would enhance the basic training your course will provide.
Just a wee thought ........ :nenau

Sorry Kirky

Hadn't seen your post until today:blast. That would be great to get FPOS training. I will mention it at the training on the 19th.

Would have worked well to have slotted it onto the end of the course I am organising, but possibly a bit late to organise now. I can probably extend the venue hire to 16:00, so would give about an hour, to an hour and a half after the first aid course finishes, if you could manage something in that time frame. If not then let me know roughly, when & where would suit.

Thanks Iain

STill spaces available if anybody can manage along

Directions to the Bellshill Library for Saturday's course. PLACES STILL AVAILABLE!!!!!!

If coming from the M74 come off at Junction 5 and take the A725 towards Coatbridge. After about a mile take the exit B7070 to Bellshill and go straight on at the roundabout. I would recommend parking at the Tesco car park and if so just carry on through 3 sets of traffic lights and you will then see Tesco on your right (Blue Line). For parking at the Library car park (if spaces available) then go right at the first traffic lights onto Cross Gates, then left into Belvidere Road, then left onto the A721(Red Line) There may be spaces on the left just under the railway bridge, but if not go to the traffic lights and turn right into John Street and immediately left into the car park. The Library also have a small car park. If there are no spaces in the 40 space car park opposite the library then go past the library and turn right into a small backyard at the back of the library. Its just before the turning into Morrisons Petrol station. Morrisons car park is restricted to 3 hours maximum.

From the A8/M8 come off at Coatbridge and follow the signs for Bellshill (also the B7070) and follow the road to you come to a roundabout and you will easily spot Tescos. Come in off the roundabout, past the Tesco Fuel and then as soon as you enter the car park find a space. There is a path at that end of the car park that leads onto the main street and if you go up the path and carry straight on you will come to the Library. There is no restriction on parking at Tescos or in the car park opposite the library. Most other spaces in Bellshill are restricted to an hour.

Tescos have a cafe which opens at 8:00 am on Saturday. The library opens at 9:00 and the plan is to start the course by 9:30 at the latest. I will bring some biscuits and juice and will try and get some hot water for a cuppa. The cafe in the library does not open to 11:00 on a Saturday.

Look forward to seeing everybody on Saturday.

Iain

Thanks for a worthwhile day.

Hi Iain,
Thanks for organising today's course. It was definitely worthwhile and appreciated, even with the early start to come up from Northumberland!
Let's hope none of us need to apply what we've learned but it is good to be better prepared :thumb2
Thanks again, safe riding one and all :)

A big thanks to you and Peter for coming all the way up to Sunny Bellshill. Bet you wondered if your car would still be outside in one piece after all the "Bellshill" remarks the St Andrews trainer made

Really enjoyed the course and was amazed about how much was crammed into it. I have always kept my First Aid certification up to date but every time I attend a course, I learn new stuff. Hopefully we will not have to put any of what we learned to use on the roadside. :thumb

thanks Iain

Great day Iain. Well organised. Thanks to Iain and Christine. Informative and entertaining. Learnt a lot.

Pleasant journey back to the deep south.

Thanks again.:aidan
