10 days away...

I've done what I always do, and got myself a nice set of Ard Cases and frames for the latest 1100....but I've got to thinking there must be GSer's out there who stick with the standard luggage.....

So the question....

Is it do-able to do a 10 day euro trip, two up , using a rack, and the standard black panniers on the 1100 GS ? ( I'll use a small tank bag as well)

Hotels all the way .....none of this camping malarkey.

I'm thinking all clothing in an Ortleib bag on the rack, shoes and toiletries in the larger pannier, and spares/pump and anything else in the small one ....

Anyone done such a trip without too much hardship

I've done 3 week trips across europe with the standard panniers. Just used a 50l ortlieb for 2 x tents and sleeping bags which we alternated between the 2 bikes. I had a small topbox from Vern too. Never had any issues with not having enough stuff. In fact always took too much.

We were staying in hotels/hostels much of the time with the odd night camping when in the boonies.

And no - I didn't take any spares at all. When the FD bearing went in the Ukraine I got a russian aerospace grade bearing and seal for £15. Came the next day too. All part of the experience in my eyes.

Easy

If you had a 1100RT, then what other choice would you have?

I've used BMW plastic panniers for years & with inner bags, find them fine

Done 2 weeks 2 up with them & Givi topbox

Now I use the Global lids on both my bikes, gives me another 6 litres per side

Clothes in large pannier

Shoes, toiletries & sundry items in small pannier

Bits & bobs in a tailback or topbox

Never use a tank bag

Thinking of getting rid of my alloy GSA panniers, can't see me using them again

Most important thing to pack, on a bike trip is..............................fresh air

Stuff never goes back the same, especially when used/wet

So if you only use 4/5ths of your capacity, you'll never get stressed

So true.... Just fitted my old pannier rails.. so on the cusp of advertising a mint set of 1 month old Ard Cases

Just get some Global lids, for your BMW panniers.......................and you'll never look back

Yes it is Bryn.

Mandy and I did 12 days in France Germany and Switzerland a few years ago with just the standard system panniers, a Givi topbox, Baglux tankbag and managed just fine.

I thought that I had the RT nearside pannier fitted at that time but when I checked my ride report of the trip I see that it was the standard GS one. And that that trip was seven years ago.

Global Lids

As stated Bryn

The way to go along with expanding inner bags I also have a 52lt Givi topbox gives enough room for the 2 of us for 2 weeks

If you fit the larger lids drill out the hinge rivets and fit stainless bolts instead then its easy to revert to smaller lids when required Got some from a local Chandler

Do remember you are escorting a wide load avec Global Lids !!!!!!!

You sure that old nail will be ok for 10 days over the water ?

That higher dark screen off e bay works a treat on the 1100 Visor up no probs under60

Good idea about the stainless bolts... the nail is up to 23k now so ready for retirement

I know the 1200 panniers are a leeeetle bit bigger but I see no reason why it shouldn't be possible with space to spare (although you always expand to fill the space available ).

Using just panniers, top box and tank bag I've done plenty of two week trips and a three week trip to Maroc with the Lovely Amanda no problem and she insists on taking all sorts of girly crap such as hair straightners, lotions & potions, minimum three pairs of shoes etc etc. She gets the small pannier and top box, I get the large pannier and misc stuff goes in the tank bag.

Easy to wash AND dry clothes help so you really never need more than two or three days worth of clothes (unless your name is Amanda.............).

I've managed a week with just a simple topbox.
If you do run out of clothes you can always wash them, or even go mad and go and buy some new stuff.
And big congratulations on post 9,000 by the way.

system panniers, big cylindrical bag on the rack, tent on top, tank bag, two up round europe for a fortnight, camping.

Pack once, go back and throw half of it away.

Don't use the Boorman / MacGregor packing system ( take absolutely everything you can think of and a load more besides)
