Pulled away from the lights this morning, accelerated to leave the pack, 30 to 70mph then the bike just kept going 80mph 90 100+. Tried to roll the throttle shut but no effect. Luckily it was 3 lanes of dual carriageway...what now ? traffic lights approaching very fast...pull in the clutch...brake.. ??? then ah...... the cut out switch. Hit it... engine died and I didn't.phew!
then a 1hour 45 min wait for the breakdown truck..thanks Carol Nash !! I was frozen.
Any way I need help. I tried the bike on the centre stand and hit 10 thou revs straight away. with the throttle closed. Have a gs 1100 96 reg. the throttle returns to closed when released.
I noticed the left throttle cable was slack on the spool near the throttle body. Also my choke has never worked too well and also is very slack in the housing. In the manual I noticed these two cables are located together in the divider mechanism.
What can I do to get my baby back on the road. Am out of work so... skint so will have to do it myself.

check the throttle cable, is it dislodged from the throttle body, or just remove the throttle cable altogether to take it out of the equation.
try simple stuff 1st.

if still revs high with the cable removed its sumat in the throtle body stuck
a more learned helper will come along soon:thumb

Check for cable fraying inside the sleeve and sticking.

100 mph and can't stop!

Thanks for the advice so far guys. Will try some of your ideas tomorrow.

that's pretty scary story dude. Glad your ok.

Check both butterfly wheels are moving when you pull twist the throttle. if one does not move, you have a broken cable. my clutch cable broke doing a fair speed on the wrong side of a three laner with truck taking up the rear. still not sure how i got out of that one:comfort

100+ can't stop!

Thanks for your concern it was scary. Didn't mention quite a few bikers went passed me while I was waiting the 1 hour 45 mins none stopped until I saw a gs on the opposite carriageway go past and did a u turn to come back to me. Nice one mate whoever you were.
Anyway the two butterfly wheels are rotating , they seeem to be ok. Thanks for the suggestion.
I did do something else that morning.. I put in a new oil sensor switch but cant see that affecting the other!

Are they returning fully to the stops ?? - Fairly simple, it's impossible for the engine to rev off idle if the butterflys are closed. Engine gets no air, engine doesn't rev :nenau.

Even if the take off plugs have fallen off the bottom of the throttle bodies there's only enough extra air to raise the idle by about 200 revs or so.

Is your bike the single throttle cable version or the later three cable.

100mph +

Hi guys, Well was ready to take tank off etc then would you believe it I spotted the problem. I said the cable on the left hand spool was loose looking but when I opened the throttle and released it the throttle retuned to its usual position.
Logic ..as Steptoe said.. closed buutterfly no revs..so butterfly must be open.
I looked down and there it was... The plastic cover which has the ancillary plug holder and covers the ..not sure what it is( Starter/dynamo) had sprung out and moved forward half an inch..this allowed the throttle to open but when released it impeded its return keeping slightly open.
can't understand how this is possible as it has an allen bolt in the cover holding it in place.
so replaced and problem solved. my baby is back on the road. Thanks for all your support.
The thing is if it can happen to me it may happen to you so beware! I think the lesson here is... know where your kill switch is..saved my life.
