The frame is the 84 bike, engine is part original. Protons bike is a replica of the 85 bike. Hope that helps
Hello everybody, Danny aka PROTON1 here. Simon aka Sycomoto is right. My bike is a Replica

. It was build as a Replica in 1988 by a Mecanic from Gaston Rahier. He was with Gaston in the 83 (Gaston was then privateer), 84 and 85 Dakar. He build the Bike 88-89 using spares from the 85 Marlboro BMW Support Truck. He got a front Brembo Hub, M1 Marzocchi (but the 300mm stroker, not the more common 280mm stroke version), Brembo Dual Piston Brake, a special Swing Arm (made by IMPEC-CADRE SYSTEM for Arceuil Motors France), a HPN made rear frame and a parts bin. He used a /7 frame (also used for 1985 bike as this was not a G/S frame !!!), and he made the bike. It was originally with a HPN Twin exhaust, unfortunately the 2nd owner changed these to a special Single exhaust... I am the 4th owner. What I am doing now is making the Replica even closer to the 1985 Bike. But here and there I made little tweaks, and bought lots of parts from HPN and was served very well by Herr Pepperl and Halbfeld. Halbfeld even welded parts for me... But I will use the Bike for ASIA and AFRICA trips, so installed a LOUD horn (necessary in those areas), Mirrors and a parcel shelve, and yes...also Blinkers.
The Standards of finish are high, very high and I say this with modesty. Please go to
www.gs-airheads.be (possibly the best G/S Airheads site...

), then go to ALBUM section, look for "the making of a Rahier Replica", and judge yourself.

Also on the ALBUM section, we created an Album of the Rebuild of Camile. Personally, I think that there are very strong indications that Camile is possibly one of the 3 original BMW Works bikes of 1984. It is possible it is the 101, as nobody claims to have that Bike, not HPN, not BMW, etc... The Team Manager of Gaston Rahier is still alive, I know him personally, he does not know where the 1984 101 went to. So it is possible, very likely Camile is the 1984 winning bike. The original 1985 bike is at HPN Seibersdorf. There are plenty of Replicas of the 85, some of these build by HPN in the 80ties. These are close replicas but not quiet the same as the 1985 bike. All HPN made replicas were G/S based. The original 85 was not based on a G/S but on the twice stronger, albeit heavier /7 frame.
Guys come in August 2012 to the GS-Airheads Tenting do in Belgium, it will be a big International event, for campfire we might burn an Oilhead there...so please no 4 Valve GS'es...only AIRHEAD GS. Cheers
