Hi all,
I've recently changed from my old '57 GS12 to a '11 GSA12 with the optional lowered 1st gear. So far i've done 1000 miles and the bike has been fantastic except for one annoying thing. When I change from 1st to 2nd gear there is a big clunk. My old GS was much smoother than this one in the gearbox department. I'm an experienced rider and don't think its me that is causing the problem, though I could be wrong. I was wondering if there is any particular technique I could employ to lessen the shock on the transmission, and will the gearbox improve with age?
Cheers, Steve.

PS. Is anyone out there planning to go to watch the Motogp in Mugello Italy later this year?

:GSThey all do that don't they Mister?
My 08 cluncks so loudly that even through a helmet and earplugs it sounds like someone clearing the breech of a Lee Enfield .303 in my ear...

I wouldn't say either of my Gsa's have 'klunked' into gear (maybe into first when first started)...but they're not exactly slick either.

...but my '10 gearbox seems a lot better than my '06 one.

My 12GS started clunking. Got worse, couldn't engage some gears. Gearbox broke and was replaced under warranty. Replacement broke a bit later. Junk.

Mine clunks neutral to first, other than that, as long as I preload the gear lever going up, and blip the throttle on the way down it's fine.

mines a klunker. nearly sh*t myself the first time as I thought id dropped the box on the road
