1100/1150 vs 1200

Faster, where?

On a trials circuit I bet a 100cc trials bike would thrash a 1200, easily, most of the time ;)

On a bumpy road where having 100bhp is a hinderance compared to 60 that can all be used, the 1200 might not be faster there too.

99% of the time it's the size of the gonads or number of brain cells (ie lack of) that dictates which bike is "faster".

but that was the point i was trying to make,if you remove the riders ability/gonads etc out of the equation then the 1200 is a faster machine
you will always get nutters who can beat fireblades on a step through moped-thats what i was saying :rob

Pip - I've had an 1150 for the past 3 years and the standard seat on the low setting is fine for me with both feet nearly flat on the ground and I'm 5' 8" with 28/29" leg... Great bike, tried the 12 a few times and they left me cold frankly. If I change it will be for a KTM 990 adventure - a really entertaining ride , but a little high seat though .... :-(

thanks for the replies.looks like a winter swop may be on the cards, just have to move the cbr on.would an 1100/1150 with the low seat be ok with a 28inch inside leg?. Bryn mate.it was my 1200 you brought:)

Nice to see you're still around :thumb

You'll be fine with the low seat :) I'm finding this one a little tall but very good looking :Motomartin

Just think the 1150 ADV has more road presence- I had no trouble at all with the 1200 but I wasn't in love with it :hug

Spending £500 a year on keeping the warranty going wasn't for me either I think.... £360 for the warranty and the rest on a service stamp. I'm sure the new owner is loving it, but I'm glad I changed back ;)

How tall are you Bryn, as i am considering a GSA?

yeah, its kind of ridiculous that we spend so much on the bike, then even more to stop problems that might not even come.they should do at least discount servicing if you have to pay for the warranty.never had extend a warranty on a bike before.what mileage is on the adv.?it does look mint.youll have some fun with it.:)

1150 without a doubt.

Had one for 6 years and as I couldn't replace it with the same, bought an 800GS.

1200 is a good bike but does nowt for me. How BMW can contemplate giving it an extra 20 BHP is beyond me. It'll be even more of a sports bike. Why not fit it with clipons and be done with it.:)

I would tend to agree with what has been posted here too.

I love my 1150 and changing to a 1200 wouldnt even cross my mind.

The 1150 has "character" which is exactly what I love about it.I have had a few other Beemers before the 1150 and it was always the BMW quirkiness/character that I loved about all the BMW's that I owned (which is now sadly gone from all the new bikes)

Not to say the 1200 isnt a good bike its just that its a more "sterile" bike than either the 1100/1150.

I had an 03 1150 gs after many years of trouble free touring on vfr's.
Now I am one of those types that worry about breaking down on the 03 although never broke down I had the parelever bairings replaced at 15000 miles. IThe dealers had two attemps at stopping oil leaking from the rubber boot firstly they did the easier option of the seal in the rear housing leaked again in the dolomites so when I got back the gear seal was replaced & that sured it.Had new front discs at 25000 I sold it at 29000 which was high mileage for me.
I then had a 3 month old 12000 which was fine apart from the ignition switch failure while south of France got rid of that after nearly 2 years & three batteries.

I picked up a mint 99 1150 with 15000 miles FDSH just had £700 spent service tyre & battery for £3.300 and love it but

My question is this at what mileage do you guys start worrying about breaking down I know new bikes break down more now than ever :) but would you say ride to morocco on a bike with 50,000 plus & not give it a second thought & I bet its the ones of you out there that do who never have any trouble:D
I love the bike just think when will the rear bearing or oil seal go rather than if

Cheers R.R.

I had never thought about "when will my 1150" break down till i started reading this bloody forum with loads of tales of woe and mechanical horrors :nenau

My last 2 jap sports bikes were all thrashed silly and kept going till 56,000 and 33,000 respectively till i got rid of them without missing a beat :thumb2

Maybe it's a Norfolk thing Bigyin:eek:

Hope not :augie

I am looking to do a lot of miles on this bike and hoping all the issues with the electrics have been sorted under the shop warranty as thats now about run out.

Interesting to see that the 1150 seems to be the favoured bike over the 1200but then i am fairly new to "ze panzers" :eek

the other opinions above. Plenty of people love their 1200s (crazy fools....) and the 1200 is undoubtedly a good bike as long as it's in warranty........

If you want efficiency go for a 1200.

Ay?

What's wrong with that statement?

The 1200 is efficient (capable of performing the task for which it was created) but completely lacking in character. Efficient doesn't mean reliable, though.

i have a standard 12, i sat on a 1150 felt sooo heavy in comparison.

Being 25, and not an old fart like most here :augie I prefer the looks of the 12, i think they look more modern, Vario luggage looks good on them, i love how flickable the bike is for its size.

1150's standard luggage did not appeal either, and being just 11 stone i found it hard to move the 11 around even on the flat. I have no trouble with the 12, even fully fueled.

If all you've done is sat on an 1150 then you're not qualified to comment :rob

Spend any length of time with one and you'd realise what your 1200 is lacking (apart from a bit of weight). Looks are neither here nor there - no-one buys a GS for its beauty - if that's what you want go and buy an MV F4.

BTW I'm 11 stone (on a heavy day) and 5'7" and I have no trouble moving my 1150 around. That's what the engine's for :D

So that's how the mags get their in-depth "road" tests out so quick :blast quick sit on the bike at a dealers, start the engine up, rev it a couple of times. Job done :) Able to get back to the office in time for tea and medals :drool
