Just put my 40 litres of 91 unleaded inside the tank, for testing ...and bike runs OK altough BMW speciefies RON95 or higher. A very bit lost of low rpm torque, bike not that brightly responsive and valves tend to do a bit more noise (altough it may be just plain wrong feeling too - nothing serious). All works as should be :)

Cheers, Margus

When you say "valves tend to be a bit more noisy" - is this when the engine is under load?- if so it's likely to be 'pinking' or pre-ignition - which sounds like a rattle in the cylinder head.

Long term pinking can cause severe damage - like holed piston crowns.:(

*Cue discussion on coding plugs and chips.*

Noupe, if, then only on low rpms. But i think my valve clearances are a bit off too, it does it a bit with 95 too.

Did another 30km to work - engine works as usual. It feels it starts better a bit too.

Gotta test that low ocane anyway, coz i'm on the way to Asia in august... And looks like there's no other way to tolerate it that just simply run on it on 1100 (no low octane setting for stock-chip?)

I've always run mine on unleaded. never even thought about using anything else? I've owned too many jap bikes i suppose.

Should I be using LRP or Super unleaded in mine??

Yes, unleaded. If you have KAT you can't use anything else.

But here the topic is low-octan (89-91 octan) and it's suitability to 1100 :)

Took the sparks off for an inspection after running 150km on 91 octan.

They look perfect! Clean Meaning no carbon buildup, too early explosing etc - all works fine.

Also took a pic from piston head crowns via spark holes - you see metal reflections, thus there's no serious carbon build up, usual moderate layer of carbon as i had running on 98 or 95 octan.

Look into both cylinders:

My full tank with 91 octan is about to get emty, now 550 kilometres (340 miles), look the sparks - they are beautiful, looked to the piston crowns - no buildup.

So i'd say it runs OK with 91. If i tank then i'll know if it did had poorer MPG or not. I think it does, and the low-octan plugs are for making detonation on the right time to use fuel more efficently? I doubt there are any noticable performance differences, at least there's none with 95 compared with 91 octan.

Please tell me you have not got a standard 24 litre 1100 petrol tank and you have managed 550kms......that's not possible , no way , not a chance, impossible, can't be done ......or I'll have to slit my wrists and end it now. I can just about squeeze 350km at a push as long as it's not too much motorway riding.

When I was travelling in the USA, 91 Octane was the best fuel I could get! Very often I'd have to run the bike on 87 (their equivalent of normal unleaded - 90-92 was Super unleaded).

It's no wonder the ADVRider site is full of questions about pinking (or pinging, as it's known there)...

that's 'cos the septics use a different way of measuring octane. in reality, it's much the same actual octane as we use.

That's interesting - I asked if that was the case when I got back and was told the numbers were equivalent - any idea of the conversion values?

The US octane number (AKI) is about 4-5 points lower than the European rating (RON). As an example, 87 AKI fuel would have a RON of 91-92. Here is a more complete explanation: Octane ratings

Septics (putrefacts)? Skeptics (doubters)? Sceptics, perhaps?

Yes, 41L TT tanko deluxe :D. I usually push it hard if i get 500km, on smooth touring often mode more than 600kms. Nice functional piece of plastic w/o affecting any bike's dynamics - driving feels the same as with stock tank, just you hold about twice the fuel.:beerjug:

That webby says it's OK to use 91 too. Dunno why BM writes RON95 then? BMW accuracy and "pedancy" :)?

Got 622 kilometres with 36 litres of 91 gas. Giving average 5.8 litres per 100km, whitch is very much the same as i get running 95 or 98 octan.

Cheers, Margus
