I've just had a call from a very good friend who lives in Kent.
He's got a '95 R1100R with 45,000 miles on it and there's play in the back wheel.

I'm guessing his FD needs rebuilding, is there anybody local to him that peeps can recommend please - ta :beerjug:

Is your friend sure it is the FD causing the play in the back wheel it could be the pivot bearings need adjusting/replacing a much simpler and cheaper job.
Tell him to get someone to hold the rear brake on whilst he checks the wheel if there is no play it will be the pivot bearings.

Thanks John, will do................er, what are the 'pivot bearings'?

Andres

The one the FD pivots on - there's a fixed pivot on the 'outside' of the swingarm and an adjustable one with a big (30mm?) locknut on the inside. Simple enough job to adjust if that is the cause of the play, just have to make copious use of hotair gun on the locknut and inside pivot prior to undoing and then adjusting.

Ive done both the FD big bearing and pivots on my 1150. Im in Kent and happy to help him out.:)

If he needs to have it done rather than just adjusted and he wants the job done by a competent pro mechanic, the man in Kent is Brian Giles. Top man. You can find him here

Thank you Fanfast & JonF :)

Still lots of play when checked with the back brake on.

I've passed on the details and will let you know.

pivot bearings then. If he hasnt ridden with them like that for ages a simple adjustment may be all they need.

I have a r1100r bevel complete with pivot bearings in a box in my garage available, it's not got abs,

I bought it originally so if I was abroad and the bearing failed, I could have it courier'd to me, but I no longer need it, as it won't fit the guzzi!

It's pretty reasonably priced as well:thumb

Reading Jon's post above I thought play with the brake on meant it wasn't the pivot bearings - am I being dense (very late night last night so I probably am being!).

If you think about it, it is obvious. If you clamp the back wheel to the final drive by application of the rear brake. You have eliminated any play in the bevel bearing, so all that is left to move is the paralever pivot bearings.

The only safe way I could check pivot bearings was to remove the back wheel and the paralever bar and then move the FD through its arc by hand... Takes 10-15 mins and If your pivot bearings are fecked you will feel the notches very easily and the worn bits would cause the play... I had 2x paralever GS's and 2x paralever K's that needed pivot bearings and non that needed a main FD bearing...
