Hi peeps,

For reasons I won't go in to (it shows I'm a complete pratt) I had to fit a new (recon) gearbox about six years back. When I went out with the new box fitted, it was pulling 500 revs more in fifth than the original.

I asked around a few dealers if I might have got a box off an 850, but apparently no, any difference in gearing between the two models would be done by the final drive. So...

Mine was originally a German market machine; any body know if they fit a different set of ratios for the German market? And if so, any ideas where I might get another G/M box? (If I could get one, wouldn't mind travelling to Germany to pick it up).

Cheers,

Dave.

Hi Guys,

Right, I posted the above in the hope that someone on here might be able to help. Plenty of views, no replies. For six years now I've been able to find no answer to this mystery of 500 revs. But this site rocks! Though nobody answered my question, I accept that probably nobody knew, I think I've found the answer thanks to Jamie_Fixit, and his post of the R1100 parts list sticky.
I was nosing through that the other day looking for a part number for the intake/throttle body 'O' ring, and decided to have a nose in the transmission section. Lo and behold, what is listed there? Two versions of a gear for the input shaft, M93/Z=22, and M94/Z=20. The first from the '93 box, changed in '94. 22 teeth instead of 20; might just be enough to account for that 500 revs.

I've just had a word with Motorworks, and the guy there thinks my suspicions are correct. He's going to do some more investigating at his end, but as I now have a spare gearbox to play with, it looks like I might finally be able to get rid of those 500 revs I don't particularly want.

Cheers to the site, and Jamie_fixit in particular!:aidan

Dave.

Edit: Oh bugger; just had a read of this site:
http://www.largiader.com/tech/oiltrans/

Looks like it's a bit more complicated than just changing the one gear wheel. Oh well, think I'll give it a miss and keep the 500 revs. Still, at least it proves my theory that the gearboxes are different, contrary to what I've been told by dealers over the last six years! :aidan

More info here
I suspected the gearbox faults were more prone in the 1100RS than the GS ?

Any opinion out there?

I know the RS forum is inundated with Transmission failures not so much with final drive but M93 and M94 gearboxes primarily

Resurrecting and hijacking Jay's thread here...
I need a serviceable pair of split collets from a M93/94 gearbox. Mine are well worn in a '98 R1100R. Gearbox is not as badly worn as the photos on the largiader site in the link in Jay's post above, but if anyone's got a gearbox that's physically damaged by accident; wrecked gears; forks bent, whatever - would it yield a decent pair of collets from an otherwise scrap gearbox?
