I would appreciate it if someone could give me the BMW reference details etc for the Gel Battery to fit a 1997 1100 GS.

Need to order first thing in the morning from a BMW car garage....so they will be as knowledgable as mutton!

Cheers

Mike, why go for a Gel battery?

My original BWM battery lasted 7 years on my 1100.

Lucy fitted a Red Optima Gel on her's and it was buggered in no time, when we took it out it was warped and bowed all sorts of shapes

I think no Gel battery is needed.
Original battery is Varta 519 013. It works fine for 4 years.
You can find similar ( and better ) batteries from other manufactures as well.

Hi Paul

In my infinite wisdom I thought the OEM was a gel......:blast

So what is the reference info for the standard BMW battery for a 97 1100 GS.

I need the reference as I have little or no faith in the local BMW "shop"....cars only and they are the danish equivalent of mentally "restricted".

Last time I ordered something from them.....them sent me a car part.....Bright as night!

Cheers

OEM is now a gel - third one down on this page:

or at least that's what you'd get these days from a BMW dealer. When our venerable 1100's were made I think they had 'normal' wet batteries.

Gel is definitely the way forward. I have a Varta lead acid (money was tight at the time) This has been fine thus far with just the occasional ABS start up fault in the depths of winter. Fine for me as i'm not addicted to the 'Bike on its side' photo opportunity... its known that lead acid batteries can occasionally leak. I wouldn't be put off by any scare stories about the Gel battery. Numerous OEM owners on this site have had these with no problems whatsoever and many have had quite outrageous life spans from them - over 8 years is not uncommon.

for my two pennyworth, get an AGM battery, better by far than gel or standard lead acid.
Long life, don't go bad if left discharged, they dont leak, and none of the problems associated with gel

Thanks guys, lots of different opinions.....needed to order this morning so as it was the only one I had details for I now have a Varta arriving at desk first thing in the morning.

Will not disclose cost... 25% VAT plus Danish "Make it Expensive for the sheer sake of it" tax.

Cheers

Mike

You'll have no problems with a Varta - just be sure to check the electrolite levels regularly. Though having said that the one on my bike has been in place for just over 3 years and hasn't needed topping up. I still check it regularly though. :augie
